The Electric Reliability Council of Texas emphasized the need for people to reduce energy use...
As temperatures dropped to near-record lows Sunday, electricity operators warned that demand could overwhelm the state’s power grid and force rotating power outages.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the state’s power grid, emphasized the need for Texans to reduce energy consumption.
“We are experiencing record-breaking electric demand due to the extreme cold temperatures that have gripped Texas ... At the same time, we are dealing with higher-than-normal generation outages due to frozen wind turbines
...
If power reserves fell too much, an energy emergency alert might be necessary, allowing ERCOT to implement rotating power outages to save energy.
....
The Public Utility Commission of Texas urged Texans turn their thermostats down to 68 degrees or lower, close shades and blinds to cut down on the amount of heat loss through windows, turn off and unplug non-essentials appliances and lighting, and avoid using large appliances such as washers and dryers.
“The lowest temperatures Texas has seen in decades necessitate a shared response across the state, from households to factories,” PUC chair DeAnn Walker said in a written statement. “Along with the tools ERCOT uses to maintain the reliability of the grid, common-sense conservation also plays a critical role in our state’s endurance of this challenge.”
The water heater temperature should also be lowered, Atmos Energy reminded folks in a tip-sheet published Saturday. Up to 25 percent of energy consumed in the home can come from the water heater, according to the Dallas-based utility company. The maximum temperature should be at 120 degrees

And yet we are all suppose to buy electric cars. Go figure on THAT big picture.
West Texas looks like crap with all those wind turbines. I drive through Amarillo to Dallas and it’s just a sea of wind turbines.
“So just when ya need it most, you might not have it.”
Heat wave! Power shortages. Turn off your AC!
Cold snap! Power shortages. Turn off your heat!
I spent 30 years in the power business back when we had an “obligation to serve” and the system delivered affordable and reliable power to everybody.
There isn’t anything Democrats cannot turn to SH!T.
“My son says the power is out in Brownwood.”
Dang, got elderly relatives there. Kids can pick them up and take them to Zephyr I guess. I don’t live in the area.
One of thousands of reasons I no longer live in the Golden(shower) State...
Very few states can afford to have the kind of surplus power needed for events this unusual. People would rebel at the rate levels required to build up the grid.
“There’s a lot to be said for gas furnaces, ovens and water heaters...”
But that assumes there will be natural gas available. The article says “limited natural-gas supplies available to generating units.”
The problem is they have been shutting down all the coal and nuclear generating plants in favor of high-efficiency gas fired combined cycles (even those are being shut down in California). Pipelines cannot be built. Uncle Joe Stolen is banning fracking everywhere and exploration on federal lands. The gas shortage problem is going to get a LOT worse.
I hear ya...
What the heck are you talking about? I never said anything of the sort. Did I hit your stupid button?
I think double is inadequate. Its barely enough now. Add millions of cars trucks trains, planes(?), boats, ships, and billions of devices and we’d need as many coal fired power plants, nuclear plants and gas plants as we could build as fast as we could and maybe never catch up.
Back in the day. Y'all letting Austin have way too much influence.
“There’s a lot to be said for gas furnaces, ovens and water heaters...”

And CLOTHES DRYERS to replace mega energy using electric dryers. Watch your meter spin when you have an electric dryer running.
Just think of all the money Hunter is going to make with his energy buddies?
He will be able to afford the biggest crack rock on the planet!
It’s like they never saw it coming!
Let’s get more illegals in here. We can huddle and stay warm.
“o many Californian’s moving here and in to BIG 4 and 5 bedroom houses.”
I don’t know what makes you so stupid but it really works. Only a liberal comments on how others live. Then you claim you have no idea what I am talking about after making that quoted comment.
41" of wet, heavy snow.
Brought down lots of power lines and trees across the roads.
I was out for 5 days, many for a month but most here in the country are prepared.
Talked to some college students from the small state university in a nearby town.
They rented a house a few miles down the road.
"We almost froze! It was horrible!"
I asked why they didn't build a fire in the back yard, considering they were surrounded by miles of woods.
"Oh!We didn't think of that" was their answer.
And I thought those windmills were the answer to all our prayers, gonna fix al gore’s global warming hysteria and all that...maybe I shoulda let good old al think for me...
yeah right....
solar with snow might help!
12 Feb: Evansville Courier & Press: What we learned while reporting about solar farms in Southwestern Indiana
by Mark Wilson
PIC: Snow covers solar panels located inside the new 50-megawatt solar farm, which is comprised of approximately 150,000 panels spread across 300 acres, being built near Troy, Ind., in Perry County, Thursday morning, Jan 28, 2021.
Renewable energy sources will account for more of the planned new electricity generation this year than coal. Solar power is a big part of that. It will make up about 39 percent of that new capacity, an expected 15 gigawatts of utility-scale solar power. It will take more than 46 million solar panels to generate that much electricity...
