GOP Sen. Cassidy: 'I voted to convict Trump because he is guilty'

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) tweeted on Saturday that he voted to convict former President Donald Trump in the Senate impeachment trial “because he is guilty.”

“Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty,” Cassidy tweeted.

Cassidy is one of seven Republicans who was convinced by the House managers' arguments and voted to convict Trump in a 57-43 vote.

Cassidy was joined by fellow Republican colleagues Sens. Mitt Romney (Utah), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Ben Sasse (Neb.), Patrick Toomey (Pa.) and Richard Burr (N.C.).

Cassidy’s decision was a surprise to some after he was seen on Friday with a statement that showed support for Trump’s acquittal, but his communications director stated that Cassidy had drafted two statements, one for and against Trump’s conviction.

Cassidy has previously said that that the House Managers had “done very well” with their arguments for Trump’s guilt.

However, the arguments fell short as conviction would have required 17 Republicans to side with the Democrats.

Since Trump was not convicted, he is allowed to run for a political office again. He has made clear he will stay involved in the political realm, but it is not clear what his future plans are with the Republican party.

“Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person.”

*************

If he had ANY respect for the Constitution he would be against this unlawful farce and affront to the law abiding citizens of his state.

I hope this comes back to bite him.

Re: Senator Cassidy saying he "voted to convict Trump because he is guilty."

Senator Cassidy voted because he failed at his obligation to remove the fraudulent impeachment from the Senate because the Senate has no authority to impeach President Trump.

That was my add-on, but it is from the Cloward-Piven strategy. It been used regularly against many people to hound them into submission.

You are automatically guilty once you are accused and punishment should swiftly follow. A trial is not necessary but is, at most, a formality on the way to the gallows.

Richard Burr (NC) - 2022
Lisa Murkowski (AK) - 2022
Patrick Toomey (PA) - 2022

Burr and Toomey are retiring.

Cassidy could have opted out.

He willingly attacked our Constitution.

Coward.

Have known the Cassidy family for a good while (I was one of his pastors). I respect his medical expertise but was surprised by his vote. He’s a good father, husband and doctor...

Benedict Arnold was a good general. Actually, he was Washington’s best general. Until he became a traitor.
