Even with acquittal, GOP sees trial ending Trump's shot at future office

Senate Republicans, including those who do not plan to vote to convict former President Trump, say this week’s impeachment trial has effectively ended any chance of him becoming the GOP presidential nominee in 2024.

From the viewpoint of some Republican senators, the compelling case presented by House prosecutors carries a silver lining: It means they likely won’t have to worry about Trump running for president again in three years, while at the same time eroding his influence in party politics more generally.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) was the only Republican senator this week who publicly expressed the view shared by many of her GOP colleagues that Trump’s actions since losing the election have nullified his future viability as a presidential candidate.

What? Pretty sure if Donald Trump runs in 2024, he will 100% win the GOP nomination. These D.C.-types are really out of touch if they actually believe this.

Already Donald Trump Jr has remarked that his father’s standing has only grown stronger since all of this nonsense began.

The GOP is already priming another candidate. Trump will be 78 years old before the next Presidential election. After the attacks on him and his family, why would he even bother to run again. He did his Patriotic duty, IMHO.

Look for the Governor of Florida, DeSantis..... Yes, I think Trump likes him, and I don’t think the GOP will be happy when they realize he is Trump like.

“Senate Republicans, including those who do not plan to vote to convict ...”

Look at how that is written. “Including” the vast majority. “Democrats, including those who are not Satan-worshipping child molesters ...”

I agree. Trump won’t be the GOP candidate. The GOP will be a distant 3rd party by 2024. President Trump will be the first MAGA Party president.

They're fooling themselves. The ratings for the sham impeachment should be telling them something.

Trump won’t have to campaign. The next three years of Democrat totalitarianism will be all he needs to secure his nomination. Especially if his primary challengers are all holding office.

Even if Trump decides he won’t run in 2024 that doesn’t mean he won’t still be the leader of the America First movement and won’t throw his support to Rick DeSsntis or Matt Gaetz or another fearless candidate not afraid of the media.
