After six months of debate over the George Washington bust, which currently sits in the Watsonville City Plaza, council members voted Tuesday evening that the statue be moved to Watsonville Public Library. In addition, a bilingual plaque will be added to the statue, that outlines Washington’s history.

Washington’s first foray into history was when, as a young man, he led a group of Virginians into the wilderness to try and stop the construction of a French fort at the forks of the Ohio River. An Indian ally bashed out the brains of a Frenchman they captured which pretty much was the cause of the French and Indian War (AKA Seven Years War).

Washington and his men quickly built a fort to defend themselves, Fort Necessity. It was very badly situated and Washington had to surrender. Because he couldn’t read French, (educated gentlemen of the time were expected to know French) he signed the French document of surrender accepting all blame. Even the king of England, George II was disgusted by this.

Don’t know if George would appreciate the irony of the plaque being in French.

It should be remembered that Mexico was a slave owning nation until 1829 when slavery was abolished.

HOWEVER, fifty years later Indians taken from the US by slave raiders were still being sold as slaves in MEXICO.

Multicultural meaning the government flooded CA with foreign nationals and illegals to the point where many towns and cities in that state are unrecognizable...Watsonville has a population about 60,000...I guess probably 70% are in the country illegally. Most everyone else fled long ago.
