COVID-19: 10-year jail sentences 'appropriate' for lying at UK border, says Transport Secretary Grant Shapps

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has defended the introduction of 10-year jail sentences for those who lie about their travel at the UK border as "appropriate".

Under new measures due to come into force from Monday, UK and Irish residents arriving in England from 33 "red list" countries will have to pay up to £1,750 to quarantine for 10 days in government-managed hotel rooms.

As part of the enforcement of the new action, anyone who tries to conceal they had been in a "red list" country in the 10 days before their arrival will face a prison sentence of up to 10 years - a penalty which has caused concern among some MPs and former judges.

Mr Shapps explained how the fresh restrictions are being introduced due to the government's concerns about new coronavirus variants being imported, or becoming more widespread, in the UK.

"What we're dealing with now are the variants and, with variants, we cannot risk it in these final stages - where we've got the vaccine rolled out - that we might end up with a difficulty from variations, although we think so far that we'll be able to take care of them through the vaccines," he told Sky News.

Idiots. A year later and they still think they can stop a virus at a border.

This news (of the 10 year prison sentence) is the big story overnight here in the UK. One of the questions being asked is how come asylum seekers can literally row a boat over to England and then get all sorts of benefits and protection - but people who actually live and pay taxes here face the prospect of prison.

My thought is that asylum seekers actually create a far more dangerous vector for COVID-19 infection and spread, than legal residents returning.

Crazy times.

“Idiots. A year later and they still think they can stop a virus at a border.”

Countries did, but it was only possible at the very beginning, and then it had to be sustained. Now it’s a joke to try to secure borders against the virus.

I think once symptoms start, rabies is nearly always fatal?

Correct. While treatable in its earliest stages, once visible signs of the disease manifest, it is in the central nervous system and inevitably fatal.

There are only 14 recorded cases of survival in humans after full on-set of the symptoms. It kills many thousands every year, mostly in Africa and Asia. A pretty gruesome way to die.

Kind of like Joe Xiden’s mandates that borders must be open for illegal aliens, but those arriving legally have to be Covid-19 negative . . .

Now it’s a joke to try to secure borders against the virus.

Japan actually does a pretty decent job. But it is an island country and almost everyone arrives by aircraft.

In addition, they don't give a rip about political correctness or being called racist for looking out for their own people and legal foreign residents first.
