Elon Musk's SpaceX has widened the scope of the public beta test of its Starlink satellite internet service.
Starlink's website emphasizes that preorders are "fully refundable," but notes in fine print that "placing a deposit does not guarantee service."
company at first is offering Starlink to customers in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.
...Prospective Starlink users can enter a service address on the company's website, with preorders available for $99. Some regions show preorder messages that say SpaceX is "targeting coverage in your area in mid to late 2021," while other preorders say 2022.

I signed up. Cut the cord. Musk and Starlink might be the future of free expression without risk of cancellation.

Don’t count on it - the second Musk realizes he can get even richer by censoring/controlling huge blocks of the population, he will be all over it.
$99 is kind of steep just for internet, tho. Must be the American rate. I wonder if Starlink has a senior plan?
Not expensive if you live in the country. I’m signing up and calling my broker about the ipo!
That's painful. 10-20X slower than fiber.
The idea is that it’ll work anywhere, and it says “during beta”.
What is the anticipated final speed?
That’s relative to where you live...
If you live in a metropolitan area that has fiber you’re correct, but that leaves out millions of potential users who live in smaller cities or in rural areas where Fiber will never be available.
If you are currently getting 5-10mb service with no prospect of it getting better anytime soon, 50-150m service is an incredible increase....
With more and more people fleeing major cities and working remotely this service couldn’t come at a better time....
Speed is not an issue for us - we get fast enough on Verizon cellular out here in the sticks.
We just HAVE to get out from underneath these data caps though, as we pay through the nose for more gigs - and SpaceX will not commit to not having data caps.
I was almost ready to push the button, but now I guess we'll wait and see what they do in that regard.
Why not the Verizon unlimited plan?
Unlimited does not mean unlimited if you use the cell phone as a hot spot for your big screen.
We're ON the "Unlimited" plan.
While it's true the data is "unlimited", the speed is capped at X GB (in our case, 15GB/month) at 4G speeds - after which we're throttled to dial up speeds.
So I should have stated "high speed data".

You know this because?
“Hotspot” devices (ethernet or WiFi to a PC) on cellular are not usually “unlimited” like cell phone data.

That would not work for me since my mother-in-law would have a killer instinct to always call right at the climatic moment of any show or sporting event being watched.
Sounds like a plan.
>>You know this because?
What in all of human history would lead you to believe that once someone has a lot of money they suddenly decide they ‘have enough’?
Musk is a lot of things, but stupid isn’t one of them - you don’t get to be the richest person on the planet by not pursuing things that will make you even richer and Musk will be no different.
>>That’s painful. 10-20X slower than fiber.
Yea, and like 20x to 100x faster than people who still don’t have access to decent broadband options - if you have access to fiber, you are not the target customer anyway.
I will buy it the second it is available in my area, and cancel the second I can get fiber instead.
Res /BW /BW /H264 /H265
1280×720(HD) 3Mbps 1.5Mbps
1920X1080(FHD) 6Mbps 3Mbps
3840×2160 (UHD) 25Mbps 12Mbps
4096×2160 (4K) 32Mbps 15Mbps
People greatly overestimate how much bandwidth they use.
All cable shows are put out at the lowest setting listed. Some OTA is 1920, but not the majority.
Even streamers don’t need fiber speeds. 6Mbps upload is enough.
If you pay for a 1Gbps connection, you are NEVER using the full capacity unless you have 25 kids running torrent sites.
we only have cellular where I am at, not even phone service, so I have 2 of these and they are Awesome, Unlimited, Unthrottled, 20-30mb, very reliable, it is on Sprint if you have coverage, $500 for the whole year, and renews every year. It is also a TAX Deductible Purchase!!!
