'THERE ARE NO DO-OVERS': Virginia lawmakers vote to repeal death penalty

Lawmakers in Virginia voted on Friday to make it the first Southern U.S. state to abolish the death penalty, a significant sign of waning support for capital punishment across the country as the practice is weighed at the federal level.

The state’s Democratic-led House of Delegates voted 57-41 on a measure to end the practice. The Senate passed the measure earlier this week, and Governor Ralph Northam, a Democrat, said he will sign the repeal into law.

Virginia has conducted 1,390 executions since 1608, the most in the United States and 68 more than Texas, the state with the second most executions. Virginia last carried out an execution in 2017.

Two men remain on Virginia’s death row, including Thomas Porter, who was convicted of killing a police officer in 2005.

Public support for capital punishment has declined in the United States. According to Gallup, support has dropped from 80% in the 1990 to 55% in 2020.

Yeah, punishments for all kinds of crimes are down or eliminated by popular demand. Couple that with a shameless, you-can’t-judge-me society and it’s a wonder anyone follows the law.

The problem is not the death penalty. The problem is a corrupt justice system devoid of all morality. Exhibit A: the performance of courts in the 2020 election.

But it is okay to keep someone in prison for the rest of their life? The wrongfully convicted are more likely to get justice if they have are under a death penalty.

Having said that, as a conservative, I don't like giving the government power of life and death.

Let me correct myself: I don’t know if the changes are popular. Elected officials have passed laws that have watered down the punishments for some very serious crimes perpetrated by Government employees and office-holders.

At least the people of Virginia got President Trump out of Office. That was what they wanted. By a vote of 93—7 the Senate certified the election. The people lived happy forever and ever.

West Virginia does not have death penalty...I think WV should be considered as a "red" state...

If Republicans ever come back to power in VA, they could reinstate death penalty...It is possible...

CA is a liberal state...A few years ago, a measure to abolish death penalty was on ballot...Voters rejected the measure...

At least one can be released from a cell.
At least one can live a natural lifespan, if only making do within a box.

Too many prosecutors are bent on conviction over innocence.

Death penalty has its place. Heinous guilt must be absolutely clear, and too many are confused about the limits thereof.

Here we go again. Remember what happened in the 70s when it was repealed. Sickos were let out of prison and immediately went back to killing.

May the 57 be the first victims.

I don't have a problem with this. I've heard too many cases of innocents being convicted and evidence planting. At least with a life sentence, there's a chance to fix it when it's wrong.

I know I'm in the minority on this here.

They are also more likely to accept a plea bargain if the other option is possibly receiving the death penalty. It’s a useful tool.
