The United States must be ready for a nuclear war with China or Russia and seek new ways to deter both countries’ use of newly acquired advanced strategic weapons, the commander of the U.S. Strategic Command is warning in a major new review of the global balance of nuclear forces.
Adm. Charles Richard, writing in the current issue of the U.S. Naval Institute journal Proceedings, offered a blunt and detailed assessment that the luxury of living in a post-Cold War era when direct armed conflict with a rival nuclear power was not possible is over.
“There is a real possibility that a regional crisis with Russia or China could escalate quickly to a conflict involving nuclear weapons, if they perceived a conventional loss would threaten the regime or state,” the four-star admiral wrote.

And they are overestimating the warm reception they expect from New Zealand when they arrive.
Imagine you are NZ. They all nuke each other. A fleet of Gulfstreams and BBJs arrives carrying a bunch of rich sanctimonious jerks who helped preside over the destruction “up there”.
How accommodating would you feel towards your new guests that arrive and quickly want a say?
Yes, I agree with all that.
I’ve thought of those scenarios.
I’ve also thought of them using third parties like North
Korea.
Kim may come to wish he had joined with Trump at some point.
The yellow peril might only nuke ten cities you say?
Go on.... I’m listening...
I can only hope they do something to protect themselves.
If they’ve sold us out, they’ll sell anyone out.
And what good is money, when there’s no place to spend it
any longer?
No, I didn’t indicate I thought they’d only hit ten.
What I said is that pinpointing just ten cities could wipe
a third of our populace off the map.
There are actually two. Pakistan and India for reasons as rational as attacking the hotel in Mumbai.
And the other, is that we engage in a direct land war against Russia or a large scale air war.
It’s a huge blind spot that we do not understand how resolved they are that no enemy will ever visit the disasters of the past on them without facing ruin on their homeland in return.
Those are the two I see. Pakistan/India with God knows what spark, or US/Russia as a result of a miscalculated belief that a direct conventional fight is in the cards.

“We’ll meet Again.”
And you know what else, sometimes, wars are started and conducted irrationally. Sometimes you can humiliate someone too much.
As someone else here once eloquently put it; “run around the world like a coked-up rock star at a party, flopping your penis into everyone’s drink, and eventually someone knocks you out”.
Another thing Reagan knew. Nothing is as provocative as weakness and instability. THEY all know we have had a coup, and are beyond the old America. They all knew how old America would act. But they look at what the coup government does to it’s own people and do not expect they would be treated any better.
It’s like if you saw your heavily armed neighbor losing his marbles, and beating his wife and threatening anyone around.
If you got the chance, you might end that threat.
I might send them a “Thank You” card.
With each passing day there seems to be less about this country worth fighting for.
The Goebbels acolytes are cranking up serfdoms fears with an old tried & true propaganda tactic...
Tyranny control 101...
Strange... No mention of any nuclear threats from NK, Iran, NY, CA, or Pakistan...
No government is ever going to shoot a nuke first. There is no scenario for that. Only an act of terrorism or an accident will a nuke be launched/detonated. And since that type of launch or detonation will be a singleton it will be apparent it is not a general nuclear strike.
At least the prospect of nuclear Armageddon is something truly terrifying compared against “slow” death from Global Warming😉
First Strike,,,

Sorta like the
Wuhan flu?
“Kim may come to wish he had joined with Trump at some point.”
He lived in the west. If he could have brought 10% of that to his nation, they would have been astonished and he would be worshiped. I think he would have signed a deal with Trump to end the war. He looked at Trump like a father figure, it was kind of almost weird.
But Kim wasn’t an idiot. He saw Mattis and Bolton rattling the saber. He saw the Mueller investigation. He saw the President’s OWN PARTY oppose him.
If you saw all that, no matter how much you wanted a deal, you would know it wouldn’t be worth the paper it was written on a week after Trump was gone. And at that point, it could have been within a few weeks.
Ohhh, I see. I had a proposed list.
Is that a joke? Not funny, not at all. And you know why.
Got himself in a terrible jam
Maybe if our 'public servants and academics keep selling out to China...
Are you one of the ones who thinks Russia would accept a conventional attack and not pop nukes? Our Generals think they would.
In the cold war NOBODY expected them to come through the Fulda Gap and for it not to go nuclear.
