The highly contagious COVID-19 variant that first emerged in the United Kingdom appears to have evolved again to include a “worrying” new mutation, researchers said.
Nearly a dozen cases have been identified that include a mutation known as E484K, which has already been identified in the South Africa and Brazil variants, the BBC reported.

Lockdowns cause plenty of economic damage and psychological issues, but they most certainly do not cause mutations. Mutations are the result of random errors during replication. Replication happens about 100 billion times during the course of an infection. Most of those mutations do nothing or are harmful to the pathogen. Everyone once in a while, a beneficial mutation happens. If it makes replication happen more efficiently or enables infection to spread more effectively, it tends to dominate other versions of the pathogen over time.

The variant names typically describe the location of the mutation and the change being made. For example, the D614G variant was named because there was a substitution at location 614 from aspartic acid to glycine. E484K is named after a glutamic acid to lysine substitution at amino acid position 484 in the S protein.
