Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Tuesday defended Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the No. 3 ranking Republican in the House who has come under fire for her vote to impeach former President Trump.
Graham called Cheney a valuable asset to the Republican party as many GOP members of Congress have targeted the congresswoman over her impeachment vote.
"I believe [Cheney] is one of the strongest and most reliable conservative voices in the Republican Party," Graham said in a tweet. "She is a fiscal and social conservative, and no one works harder to ensure that our military is well prepared."
Graham added, "In the eyes of many - Liz Cheney’s experience, leadership, and strength are invaluable to the Republican Party."
Liz knows that a strong America is a safe America. She believes we must confront radical Islam and take the fight to them to ensure there are no more 9/11’s.
The senator's statement comes just hours after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) issued a similar defense of Cheney while blasting Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), a staunch defender of Trump who has faced fierce criticism for promoting a number of conspiracy theories.
"Liz Cheney is a leader with deep convictions and the courage to act on them," McConnell said to CNN of the Wyoming lawmaker.
On Wednesday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy plans to hold a meeting of rank and file Republicans as some members are looking to oust Cheney from her leadership position over her impeachment vote.
House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.) are circulating a petition to demand Cheney resign from her post as Chairwoman of the Hosue GOP conference, the Hill reported.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) has spent time in Wyoming in recent days, railing against Cheney during small gatherings of Trump supporters.
"I think you’ll have, you know, three constituencies in our conference — those who want to drive out the populists, those who want to drive out the establishment and those who simply want peace,” Gaetz said on Monday.
Graham, a top ally of Trump while he was still in office, has since backed off unfounded claims of voter fraud peddled by Trump and his allies and said it is time for the party and the country to move on.
He, along with McConnell and all but five other GOP senators, voted in favor of a measure introduced by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) arguing the second impeachment of Trump was unconstitutional because he has already left office.
The House impeached Trump after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol Building on Jan. 6.
Lines being clearly drawn ...
Bingo.
this is WY’s business.this is House business. this is not Lindsey’s biz’ness.
Would be nice if the gop censured Lindsay now too
Cheney used very, very poor judgement with her impeachment vote. Basically, she told 75 million people to “go f*** yourselves”. Stupid, I don’t care if you are a globalist/ elitist. Most of us are NOT going to support somebody who hate us and our cause. Very, very poor judgement.
Why is the senate sticking their nose into House business? Does Mitch and Lindsey not have any work to do? They both need to mind their own business.
Anyone surprised by this!! STOP all of the talk about STAYING with Republican Party STOP the Republican Party is SCUM!! It is the uni party!!
You’re a sucker if you remain a member of the thoroughly corrupt, feckless GOP.
Lincoln Project Republicans, and we need to get rid of all of them.
This explains why 11,000 Oregonians just left the Republican party in January to become independents.
If nobody votes for them, they are gone.
****************
I don’t think anyone would notice. Especially if there was a REAL party to replace it.
You’re right. The left will allow enough Republicans to be reelected in order to give the illusion of a bipartisan congress.
Amen to thst!
Time for a NEW party. It's LONG overdue.
It’s starting to look like they trade off handling unpopular (with the base) issues in order to be, as an entity, a moving target when it comes to re-election/being primaried/ etc. Of course when it’s an issue like amnesty which directly affects their gravy train, they will pull together to oppose all of us. A few arw designated to bleat about abortion, Big Gov, other fundamental conservative issues-while either never doing anything concrete on the issues (abortion , CommieCare), or actually exacerbating the problem (ie Big Gov). President Trump upset their balancing act by actually meaning what he said and doing what he could to address conservative concerns-they don’t want the issues to go away, they need them for talking points when they run for office, and as a club to beat us over the head with should we get wise and fed up with their smoke and mirrors. The next time they support amnesty, for instance, and we start rumbling, they can use say something like, “But you need us, who else will oppose abortion?” (As if they ever actually do anything-President Trump did, AND addressed illegal immigration too, and they’ll never forgive him for showing them up for the phonies they are-now they’re turning on us, the base, with their accusations of “Trump worshippers”-we don’t worship Trump, but we should have everlasting gratitude to him for proving that they were indeed disingenuous liars all along. They’ll never forgive him for that. Now they don’t know what to do that the conservative base is onto them-looks like throw us overboard because they can’t lie their way out of this now, thanks to President Trump showing them up).
Still a bunch of cuck chumps on FR that believe we should try to reform the GOP as opposed to starting the new American Party?
F’it! I’ll take my chances in the ‘Blade Runner’ future of nihilism of this oligarchy before I try to get that mule back on their hooves for the hundredth time.
“Social conservative” what does that even mean now? Is she against faggot marriage ? I don’t recall the last the right won anything in the culture war.
She voted for baseless, unlawful impeachment of Trump. Liz has no business in party leadership. Sorry Mitch & Linsey, that wasn’t courage. It is cowardice.
Close your eyes, who do you see?
Exactly but Freepers gonna cling
Jrabbit: Why Cruz? He was one of very few that admitted the fraud and called for the audit to prove it.... the rest ran for the hills !! If the Dems were sure they won the election without fraud they would have welcomed the audit. I’m pretty sure they will welcome the upcoming audits against those who supported Trump ! Cornyn I understand...never again to get a vote from me ! But admittedly his opponent MJ Haggar would have been much worse than Big John - but dang he has 6 more years !
