San Francisco school official deems acronyms ‘racist’ in axing arts department moniker

The San Francisco public school arts department — whose board decided last week to rename 44 schools that honored figures such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington — have decided to take on their next target: acronyms.

The director of the district’s arts department told local ABC7 news that a decision has been made to change the name of their department, “VAPA,” which is short for visual and performing arts.

The new name will be SFUSD Arts Department.

“We are prioritizing antiracist arts instruction in our work,” the director, Sam Bass, told the network.

“The use of so many acronyms within the educational field often tends to alienate those who may not speak English to understand the acronym.”

It was not clear whether SFUSD was also considered a racist acronym.

In a memo, the department cited a 1999 paper titled “White Supremacy Culture,” which details a list of “characteristics” of that culture.

The writer, Tema Okun, claims the characteristics are “damaging because they are used as norms and standards without being proactively named or chosen by the group” and promote “white supremacy thinking.”

Bass, the arts director, said that the move to change the name was “a very simple step we can take to just be referred to as the SFUSD Arts Department for families to better understand who we are.”

Every human being will of course, view the world through the lens of bias based on their instinct, upbringing, education and experience. For some this lens is more distorted than for others, and while our individual biases do in fact, to one degree or another, detach us from objective reality, is is not in any way unnatural. A healthy and significant component of humility is the effort (for many the struggle) to view the world objectively without biases in order to properly evaluate one's relationship to and with the people and events around them. Understanding that the world is bigger than self and that other perspectives exist is healthy. Acknowledging that there is objective fact and working to accept it, though we may not like it, is also a healthy endeavor.

The natural tendency/bias of those in the victim culture is to see themselves as victims, which ultimately leads to paranoia. If a person or group feels that they have been oppressed by another, that becomes the lens through which they choose to view the world and everybody becomes their oppressor, out to get them. For these people, there is absolutely no incentive to try to step outside of their bias and make any effort to exercise any degree of objectivity. That is why their science, journalism and economics suck, and the further they retreat into their cocoon of victimhood, the more detached they become from reality.

These are not sane, healthy people we are allowing to dictate public policy, but the cult of victimhood has become so powerful that we as a society, continue to enable them.
