~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida

FLtyndallafb3

Tyndall Air Force Base is a United States Air Force Base located 12 miles east of Panama City, Florida. The base was named in honor of World War I pilot 1st Lt. Frank Benjamin Tyndall. The base operating unit and host wing is the 325th Fighter Wing (325 FW) of the Air Combat Command (ACC). In October 2018, Hurricane Michael caused catastrophic damage to the base.

FLtyndallafb7

The 325th Fighter Wing’s primary mission is to provide a combat ready air dominance force, train F-22A Raptor pilots and maintenance personnel, and train air battle managers to support the combat Air Force. Tyndall's combat mission is performed by the 95th Fighter Squadron. Training for F-22 pilots is performed in the 43d Fighter Squadron and the 2d Fighter Training Squadron.

FLtyndallafb1

The 325th Air Control Squadron trains air battle managers for assignment to combat Air Force units. Additionally, wing personnel manage the southeastern air combat maneuvering instrumentation range and provide mission-ready F-15, F-16, and F-22 air dominance forces in support of the Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the Commander, First Air Force (1 AF) / Air Forces Northern (AFNORTH) contingency plans.

FLtyndallafb6

The 95th FS, proudly nicknamed the "Boneheads," activated in early 1942 flying the original twin-tailed fighter, the P-38 Lightning, supporting the Allied invasions of North Africa and Italy. The squadron performed amazing aerial combat and support, winning two Distinguished Unit Citations during attacks on the Italian peninsula.

Today, the Boneheads continued to provide air superiority training in the F-15 at Tyndall. The force structure of the Combat Air Forces changed as Air Force leadership was faced with the demands of a Global War on Terrorism and a shrinking Air Force budget. With the F-15 fleet aging rapidly, the Air Force decided to retire almost all F-15 A-D models and close the F-15 training units.

Thus, the 95th FS inactivated on Sept. 21, 2010. The Boneheads glorious heritage and overwhelming local support made it the perfect selection for the new operational F-22 squadron at Tyndall, Florida.

Hey radu!

If by 'lovely' weather, you mean warm and dry, you're right, it has warmed up and all that snow that dumped on us a week ago is gone. We're also suppose to be in the 50's this week too.

Son and I may get a chance to go back to our range on Friday.

'Sup your way?

Warm and dry? Wow! Maybe I need to find another radar site. It showed rain over you a little while ago as a storm system moves in. I’m mad that NOAA is all screwed up now that Flash no longer works. Their new site sux.

We’d LOVE to have your warm and dry! LOL!! Cold and windy with a little snow here. The whole week will feel like winter but it IS February. LOL

I hope nothing comes up to cancel your plans at the range this weekend. You and your son have a great time when you get to go.

Not much going on here. Didn’t have any reason to go anywhere so we both just stayed put in the warmth of the house. LOL

Good evening, Janey/...((HUGS))...waiting at home or waiting in Denver?

Flying into a snow storm doesn’t sound good.

Prep did help...today was not too wild. Most things handled easily.

No wind at all over here near the mountains....just bright sunshine. Pretty day....but cold.

I imagine watching the planes crab on in would be a stomach churner...waggling wings trying to stay level.

Hey there, Kathy.

It sure IS cold up there! A woman who lives in Anchorage posted at the Lake Hood cam that it was -12 at her house this morning. BRRRRRRRRRRRRR With the wind y’all had, it must have been reeeeeeeally miserable. It’s a good thing you didn’t have to get out in that mess.
Did you start your car to let it run for a bit?

It’s winter here, too, just not as cold.

Well that’s something I didn’t expect to hear! How often do you have a Monday that isn’t hair-pulling crazy? LOL

You were lucky to miss out on the wind. It was pretty bad at the airport. The planes’ wings weren’t wagging all that much but they were coming in sideways, straightening out at the last minute before landing. Unnerving to watch, especially for one who won’t fly. LOL

At least at night all we can see is the lights so it isn’t as obvious if the planes are still crabbing.

Howdy, luvie.

Did it ever warm up or did it stay chilly all day?

Hey there!

It warmed up nicely. It’s supposed to be as high as 82 on Wednesday. LOL! Then back to the 50s on Sunday.

The roller coaster is alive and well!

Good Evening Kathy! (((HUGS))) - waiting at home but they want me to come to Denver in case of needing extra crew.

Right now that 82 sounds REAL nice. Our warmest day this week will be Thursday at 56. With rain. An arctic blast is coming down this weekend and we aren’t looking forward to that.

Yikes! That sounds like winter. Which is what we’re supposed to be having. LOL! Hope it doesn’t get too nasty.

I know it’ll cool off here starting Thursday, but I’ll nearly guarantee there won’t be any wet stuff involved. *sigh*

Feels like winter too! LOL We’ve gotten off pretty easy so far so I guess we can’t complain. If winter runs into April, which it’s done before, you bet I’ll complain then.

I have no idea how much wet stuff we’ll get down here in this part of the state. Systems coming in from the NW tend to leave us out. This last one did.

Well, that seems to be true. Be glad you were left out of this last one that hit north of you. Ugh. What a mess it’s made up there.

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

How's everyone doing this morning?

It sure has made a mess north of us.
Our mountains had some snow last night and are still under a winter weather advisory so I guess a lot of the roads are in bad shape. We had just enough to leave a dusting on the cars but nothing on the ground.
We got the cold and the wind though. It’s still blowing now. Hubby poked his head in a few minutes ago to ask if I could hear it and I can’t. It’s out of the north and his room is o the north side of the house so he can hear it. When it was roaring out of the south ahead of the storm, I could hear it too well. It sounded like a never-ending train.

Thank goodness you are in that house, or you could not only hear the wind but feel it too. LOL!

A storm chaser named Reed Timmer had a video or two[?] that he took in or near Gatlinburg. Brrrr! Be glad you are where you are!
