Some parents say they're keeping their kids home from school this week because of a Black Lives Matter school discussion that includes Queer and Trans Affirmations.
In some other school districts, students have been asked to make a pledge to accepting the affirmations, but not in Ames.
"In some states they have made a pledge to support the 13 principles, but we are really having conversations about accepting and affirming differences." Says Dr. Anthony Jones, Director of Equity for Ames Community School District.
He says in Ames schools the discussions are about making sure all students feel accepted.
"It's about affirming yourself first, and how you identify, and then helping our students to affirm and appreciate and value their classmates in their celebration of themselves." Jones says.

Our North Idaho region doesn’t have many minorities, but the NextDoor app always shows some happy neighborhood black kids out in front of a house jumping rope. They don’t even rotate their cover photo showing that one the proper 13% of the time. Nope, it’s up there 100% of the time.
Bull scheist. It's about marginalizing White students and making them feel guilty about something over which neither they nor their ancestors had control over.
These children are the descendants of a folk who, despite their own struggles and privations, labored and built a wonderful culture in the prairie wilderness.
How, precisely, does the Burning, Looting, and Murdering we witnessed between 2016 and 2020 square with these 13 inane, sophomoric “Guiding Principles?”

if affirming the black lives matter and first doing so, makes sure that all lives matter.
White lives matter, because from that truth comes the ability to extend a loving hand towards all.
So why is this statement racist, and the one with the capitalized word black healing?
Answer, it is not. This is about putting down the heterosexual and the White. Which from here on out I will capitalize, because to do so shows not that Whites are superior, but to enhance healing in other colored people.
Watch for news that the homes of the children kept home this week receive visits from state Social Workers to ensure that the children are not being abused by their Right Wing parents or having their homosexual or trans aspirations suppressed.
