Trump’s top impeachment lawyer has left his team

Former President Donald Trump has lost his top impeachment lawyer just days before his trial is to begin, a person familiar with his legal strategy and two attorneys close to the team confirmed on Saturday night.

Butch Bowers, a South Carolina lawyer who was reportedly set to play a major role in the Senate’s trial of the former president, is now no longer with the team. Deborah Barbier, another South Carolina lawyer, won’t be either. The person described it as a “mutual decision” and said new names will be announced shortly.

The decision by Bowers and Barbier to not join the team raised immediate questions, both about what compelled them to part ways and who actually will play the role of lawyer to Trump when the impeachment trial starts in early February.

Trump should NOT field a “defense”.

The whole process is a sham.

McConnell needs to resign.

I wish he were not even responding or participating in any way. Let them have their little party, zero response.

John Adams defended Redcoats when he knew they were not guilty. In his new country, the principle that the law had to be truly impartial had to be upheld in practice. That took real courage to go against the howling mob. We need true patriots like that today, not cowering feckless weasels looking out only for themselves only. A pox on these lawyers.

Trump should DECLINE to send ANY legal team or defense, simply stating that the “trial” is unlawful, illegitimate, and has no bearing on him as he is out of office.

-- the principle that the law had to be truly impartial had to be upheld in practice --

Quaint history.

Doesn’t matter there isn’t more than 55 gutless pukes that will vote to unlawfully impeach President Trump.

The impeachment itself is null because the Constitution addresses the impeachment of presidents. It is silent on the impeachment of former presidents. Since the impeachment itself is unconstitutional, there can be no trial.

Even John Roberts understands this.

I think there was a threat (I don’t remember from whom) that anyone who was participating in his defense could expect to have no jobs in the future, lose their practice and basically be blackballed. Also that there were threats against anyone associated with Trump’s legal defense, ranging from their family members to their law partners.

The left is playing hardball.

Yahoo creates a whole new job category: A “top” lawyer with a “minor” role.

Trump should hire a team of actors to stage a Marx Brothers style slapstick routine for his defense. That may be the only defense team worthy of the charges.
