The Arctic has seen rapid transformation in recent years as a result of climate change, with rising temperatures and significant fluctuations in sea ice thickness. Those changes could be causing three species of Arctic seals to lose body mass at alarming rates, according to a new study.
The researchers found that the seals' body condition declined in almost all age and sex classes in every studied species. Only two groups, spotted seal subadults and adults, did not experience a decline in body condition.
"Our findings point strongly to climate-related impacts. We saw declines in seal condition that coincided with recent pronounced warming," lead researcher Peter Boveng said in a statement. "Warming conditions in the Arctic seem to be affecting the condition of individual seals in a way that could impact their populations."
The findings are especially alarming due to the species' position on the food chain. The authors noted that climate change has often been shown to impact fish and other animals low on the food chain who are less able to switch between sources of prey as ecosystems change.
The research shows a grim outlook for seal populations in these areas should temperatures continue to increase and ice continues melting, the authors said.
In their study, NOAA fisheries reported that these environmental changes have been "extremely rapid," and marine heat waves are happening more often and more intensely around the world.

Well, if it’s not as cold, they don’t have to generate as much body fat to keep warm, so of course, they’re going to be slimmer. Duh!

If they stuck with reporting the weather they would only be wrong 50% of the time. I have no idea why they would want to get involved in predicting climate change, it makes them wrong 75% of the time. In any real business you would get fired for that.
Maybe they’re just breeding like rats and now there is not enough food for all of them.
The squirrels around my house are quite plump this year. Could be because they are well fed or because it’s been pretty darn cold.........Or both

Makes them feel so âconnectedâ to their god who probably is flying around right now in his private jet paid for by tax dollars or some other scam he didnât earn.
I’d think the enviros would be happy there are less baby seals to be clubbed.
They studied only “harbor seals”, yet projected all their conclusions to all seals. It is noted that they did not capitalize the word “harbor”. Were this honest journalism, one could only conclude that they only studied seals they found in the local harbor. Being that the whole article is laced with mis-information, it’s not possible to tell what they studied.
They point out that seal populations had declined 86% over a period of two decades, but they somehow decided that this data, from only 2014 to 2016”, was sufficient to make their conclusion that this decline in body mass was not related to the other decline in population. Note that their data period is AT MOST, two years. If it was anything less than 24 full months, the data might even be biased by having less than full annual changes.

Oh, so when we look at a satellite picture of the Arctic ice cap, there is no way we can judge the thickness, but we can see that the area of the ice cap remains rather stable from decade to decade. Yep, it is all about thickness now.
In 2008 the very learned scientist, Al Gore, (you are aware he invented the internet because he said so) was parroting other learned scientist who were predicting that there would be no summer Arctic ice cap of any thickness by 2014. Anyone know when that actually happened?

in 1899 William Harriman brought a group of scientist and prominent people on an expedition to Alaska on a swank ship he outfitted. John Muir had previously traveled off the coast of Alaska in 1879, 1890 and 1890. He found numerous glaciers that touched the ocean and covered large areas of bays. In 1899 Muir found some of these glaciers had retreated by miles.
In Tip of the Iceberg by Mark Adams, he writes of some of these dramatic changes Muir saw and documented occurring in ~20 years, or less. Adams traveled the same route and found the same glaciers continue retreating. Of course without irony, he believes in anthropomorphic climate change is causing it.
