WILMINGTON, Delaware (WPVI) -- Commuters can expect to see delays on Interstate 95 through Wilmington beginning in February.
It's time for some rehabilitation, according to the Delaware Department of Transportation, which will be restoring a nearly one-mile corridor through Wilmington.
They will also be overhauling 19 bridges to make sure it's safe for the next 30 years.
The project will take about two years, and some commuters are frustrated.
"Very frustrating. It's already always congested with traffic. So, if it's down to one lane, it's going to be even worse," said Stephanie Gentile from Tinicum.
Traffic will be reduced by a lane in each direction in phase one, which is set to begin February 12, where all northbound lanes will close at the 95/495 split north of route 141. Drivers will share the southbound side of the highway until the Brandywine River Bridge near Route 202.
"We know that it is going to be very disruptive for folks not only in Delaware, and Wilmington, but those who travel in the region and are used to taking I-95 as it carries about 110,000 vehicles per day," said C.R. McLeod, Director of community relations for DelDOT.

PING!
Spiffing up Delaware’s roads for Biden when he returns home after Harris sends him packing.
So funny that people are complaining. How else do you fix roads. People complain roads are a mess. Can’t have it both ways.
They have nothing on Florida. A toll ever 100 feet especially in Orlando.
“A toll every 100 feet especially in Orlando.”
The Orlando area is lousy bad for toll roads but given the number of tourists who come there, it’s a cash cow for the Florida Dept of Transportation.
My son started at the US Naval Academy in July, 2003.
We travelled I-95 from NY to Maryland for every Navy football game every year until this season, when attendance at games was prohibited.
That’s 17 years.
I swear that I-95 in Delaware was under construction for at least 12 of those 17 years.
Tough horse hockey. What are the alternatives? Let the roads crumble? How about all the leftists in DE that hate fossil fuels so much, want to shutter pipelines, oil and gas fields, just get off the lazy butts and walk. That will clear the roads really quick. (Like that would really happen.)
Since you’re in PA, it is understandable how you abhor crappy roads. I lived in central PA for a couple years and did some serious biz driving all over the state.
Based on my experience, PA roads are some of the worst I’ve ever experienced, and PA drivers aren’t much better.
Yep. Just like they do on the Hatem. They are always blocking off lanes.
Yes,infrastructure needs improvement but the slow moving of projects is what makes it so costly and agonizing for those who have to use the roads.
Better things for better living...😊
Thank your former Senator Uncle Ho Joe Biden
I actually took the Hatem bridge last fall, when they already had the toll gantry installed on the south end. There was still a sign hanging down from one of the trusses warning drivers about the now-decommissioned toll booths at the north end.
