RESOLUTION OF CENSURE AGAINST SENATOR BENJAMIN ERIC SASSE
Whereas, on 26 January 2021, 55 U.S. Senators voted to reject a Point of Order, raised by Senator Rand Paul – that impeachment of a private citizen is unconstitutional; and that among those senators objecting were five Republicans, including: Senator Susan Collins (ME), Senator Lisa Murkowski (AK), Senator Mitt Romney (UT), Senator Ben Sasse (NE), and Senator Pat Toomey (PA);
Whereas, on 8 January 2021, as reported by Grant Schulte, of the Associated Press (‘Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse says Trump incited Capitol Riot’) – in response to President Donald J. Trump’s speech, given 6 January 2021 at the ‘Save America’ rally, at Ellipse Park in Washington, D.C – Senator Sasse publicly declared that the president incited a riot at the U.S. Capitol building, accusing him of “pouring gasoline on these fires of division,” and further asserted that the president deserves some blame;
Whereas, on 8 January 2021, as reported by Lexi Lonas, of The Hill (‘Sasse says Trump was “delighted” and “excited” by reports of Capitol riot’), during an on-air radio interview with Hugh Hewitt, Senator Sasse stated: “As this was unfolding on television, Donald Trump was walking around the White House confused about why other people on his team weren’t as excited as he was, as you had rioters pushing against Capitol Police trying to get into the building,” Sasse further asserted of President Trump “He was delighted” [about the riot.] Senator Sasse continued: “I’m sure you’ve also had conversations with other senior White House officials, as I have” – but the senator did not name which officials said Trump was “delighted;”
Whereas, on 8 January 2021, as reported by Lexi Lonas, of The Hill (‘Sasse says Trump was “delighted” and “excited” by reports of Capitol riot’), during the interview with Hugh Hewitt, Senator Sasse attacked the integrity of Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), the first senator to announce he would object to the Electoral College results. Senator Sasse called it “a really dumbass stunt, based on lies that the election was fraudulent;”
Whereas, on 8 January 2021, in an interview with CBS This Morning, Senator Sasse stated: “The American people have been lied to, chiefly by Donald Trump, and lies have consequences, and those consequences are now found in five dead Americans, and a Capital building that's in shambles. Legislators should not be aiding and abetting those kinds of lies. The president has disregarded his oath of office … The House, if they come together and have a process, I will definitely consider whatever articles they might move; because, as I've told you, I believe the president has disregarded his oath of office. He swore an oath to the American people to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. He acted against that. What he did was wicked;”
Whereas, on 15 October 2020, in a Washington Post story – ‘GOP Sen. Sasse says Trump mistreats women, flirts with white supremacy and secretly mocks evangelicals’ – WP reporter Colby Itkowitz wrote the following: Sen. Ben Sasse eviscerated President Trump during a phone call with constituents, in which the Nebraska Republican accused the president of cozying up to dictators, mistreating women, flirting with white supremacists and irresponsibly handling the corona virus pandemic.
Sasse’s comments were disclosed by the Washington Examiner, which obtained an audio recording of the call, a campaign telephone townhall with Nebraska voters. Sasse’s spokesman verified that the reporting was accurate, but declined to answer more specific questions such as when the call happened. … In the call, Sasse unleashed a torrent of criticisms at Trump:
“The way he kisses dictators’ butts. I mean, the way he ignores the Uighurs, our literal concentration camps in Xinjiang. Right now, he hasn’t lifted a finger on behalf of the Hong-Kongers. The United States now regularly sells out our allies under his leadership, the way he treats women, spends like a drunken sailor. The ways I criticize President Obama for that kind of spending; I’ve criticized President Trump for as well. He mocks evangelicals behind closed doors. His family has treated the presidency like a business opportunity. He’s flirted with white supremacists.”
The senator also criticized the president’s handling of the corona virus pandemic on the call… Sasse said Trump mishandled it from the beginning. “But the reality is that he careened from curb to curb. First, he ignored covid. And then he went into full economic shutdown mode. He was the one who said 10 to 14 days of shutdown would fix this. And that was always wrong. I mean, and so I don’t think the way he’s led through covid has been reasonable or responsible, or right;”
Whereas, Senator Ben Sasse has persistently engaged in public acts of ridicule and calumny against President Donald J. Trump, through both the spoken and written word, questioning the president’s agenda, decisions, motives, and competency;
Whereas Senator Ben Sasse has publically shown contempt for Donald J. Trump, and likewise he has made disparaging remarks towards the Trump family;
Whereas Senator Ben Sasse has repeatedly, through imprudent public remarks, demonstrated a general disrespect for the Office of the President, and likewise for the reputation of his fellow Republican senators, mocking their integrity;
Whereas, Senator Ben Sasse shows indifference to the factual evidence of illicit acts, as were committed during the 3 November 2020 election, including: affidavits from individuals who witnessed intimidation, irregularities and fraud in the submission and counting of ballots; election malfeasance, committed by elected and appointed officials within the executive and judiciary branches of state governments – as occurred in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Michigan – in violation of state election laws and / or constitutions, thus usurping the plenary power granted solely to state legislatures by the U.S. Constitution (Article 1, Sec. 4, Clause 1, and Article 2, Clause 2) in determining the manner, time and place of elections, and the manner in choosing electors.
Whereas Senator Ben Sasse disregards or is otherwise inexcusably ignorant of the laws governing free speech – specifically that test established by the U.S. Supreme Court in its decision Brandenburg v. Ohio 395 U.S. 444 (1969), which set forth the elements required to judge whether a person’s words violate the criminal code against inciting violence. In light of Brandenburg, and the Court’s unchallenged and unchanged precedent thereof, President Donald J. Trump’s speech of 6 January 2021 does not meet the prescribed elements that establish, in fact and law, an act of criminal incitement;
Whereas Senator Ben Sasse, in defiance of the Constitution’s plain meaning, as to the penalty incurred by impeachment and conviction – removal from office (Article 2, Sec. 4, and Article 1, Sec. 3, Clause 7), now seeks to impeach the private citizen, Donald J. Trump – and thus we now have cause to wonder whether Senator Sasse would also willingly violate the prohibition against Bills of Attainder (Article 1, Sec. 9, Clause 3;
Therefore, be it resolved, in consideration of the remarks and actions of Senator Sasse, as stipulated above in this complaint, and following from our formal deliberation, we the undersigned, individually and corporately, agree and declare that Senator Benjamin Eric Sasse warrants and shall incur the penalty of CENSURE, and further we declare such penalty is now imposed by this lawfully convened body –The Nebraska Republican State Central Committee. CENSURE is decreed and so moved, this day, 13 February 2021.
Hahahahaha.
Them damn pigs.
May I hire you as my secretary? LOL ...
Geeze, I got my hands full just with drafting this resolution of censure!
Do you know how many Republicans show up when I hold our County Convention, to elect party officers and choose delegates for the State Convention? Two or three, including me.
I ‘ve been stuck with the county chairmanship since 2012. Heck, I did not even run for a committeeman slot on the SSC, but somehow I got elected to the position!
The more I show up, the more I speak out, the more responsibility Republicans in my Congressional District decide to throw on my shoulders. Last evening, another county chair requested that I run for office - against Congressman Adrian Smith! To which request I replied NO!
Unfortunately for me, the apathy here among the agricultural folk is thick - or at least it was up until now.
Hey old-ager, do this one next.
Well then that would explain allot.
Great resolution but add that he should resign his seat immediately!
> Well then that would explain allot.
Getting near my allotment for the day!
Agree. Many of us are not willing to lose the country we plus generations of our family fought for and died for.
Agree, Sasse as described earlier is like no Nebraskan I ever knew. I want him GONE.
Outstanding.
Excellent summary of the facts.
But, censure?
Meaningless.
The state GOP should demand his resignation.
There is another new thread on FR right now advocating, basically, no resistance beyond prayer. Those Christians prioritize the “turn the other cheek” admonition while disregarding other, greater, admonitions that basically add up to having self-respect for oneself and love for others (the 2nd Greatest Commandment). How can one love their neighbors by turning away while some neighbors are aborted with government approval, and others are robbed, swindled, brainwashed, and have their freedoms taken away by their own government sworn to protect them?
IMO, of all the arguments used to damage Trump in the 2020 election, this is the one that did the most damage. And, it is total B.S. right out of the DNC, told so often without serious pushback from the President's "allies" that tens of millions of people swallowed it, hook, line, and sinker.
I mean, I know JimRob has asked us all to be more civil, but this infuriates me so much... it's pretty dang difficult to express myself sufficiently without turning this post blue-hot. THE ABOVE QUOTE ALONE should get Sasse removed from any possible Republican Party support.
I'll tell you what, Senator Sasse, I know your arrogant derrière would never condescend to debate a FReeper, and you'll probably never see this post, but I challenge you to get on a stage with me, all media watching, and give me equal time, and I'll shred these feces coming out of your pie-hole and throw them straight to Hades where they belong.
Just one example:
I listened to most of those early press conferences and statements, read transcripts of many, and have excellent reading and listening comprehension skills: I not once took President Trump to state or even imply that "10 to 14 days of shutdown would fix this." What twisted political balderdash you speak! Nor did Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx, VP Pence, Sec. Azar, etc. say such. I CLEARLY understood from President Trump on down that the initial shutdown was in a situation of uncertainty (some models showing very high fatalities in the 1st few months), but it would buy time to help prepare the health care system response, and would reduce the initial surge of serious illnesses and fatalities such that the health care system would not be overwhelmed. President Trump also CLEARLY understood and stated the lockdowns were a temporary measure and should not be overdone. He said over and over and over and over that the "cure" (plainly understood by anyone not a moron to be the initial slowdown of the virus spread and fatalities) should not be worse than the disease.
In point of fact, despite some serious "curb-to-curb", mistakes and misteps by advisers and agencies such as Dr. Fauci, the CDC (what a God-awful incompetent-where-it-most-counts "deep state" entrenched gov't agency!), and the Surgeon General, the initial surge was mitigated to be not as bad as feared. After that, there is little to criticize about the President's approach. OTOH, most of the rest of the above group I think should be jailed for ongoing-to-Jan.20 incompetence, causing in my estimation at least 100k and maybe 200k unnecessary fatalities, as well as great (and mostly unnecessary) economic damage. Granted most of the State Governors are no better, but they can probably claim they turned to the "Feds" for guidance. I'd suggest you address that, but I've heard nothing to indicate you even recognize the root problems, just the symptoms. Anything to bash Trump? Bah!
I am undecided if you need an English comprehension course, a primer in honesty, are too infatuated with power, or have just been in DC too long. All the above?
The best summary I have for you, Senator Sasse, is "Get Thee behind me." Or, if you can figure out what's best for America (doubtful, you've been a pol too long), apologize to the people and get Thee behind the 99% great and decent citizens who are President Trump supporters.
No. You'd have to catch him in some illegality, etc., to make him resign. Sasse might be smart enough to stay clean.
Figure out how to dry up some of the money and primary him.
LOL - is that the Q solution?
The point is - Sasse, and the Political Left, are convinced that the Republican Party will never fight back, no matter how grave the insult or the betrayal.
So far, Sasse and the Political Left are absolutely correct.
Q solution?
You smoking some pretty good weed?
Q would suggest Lin Wood drop the Kraken in a 4-D chess move. Or similar nonsense.
Look, I don’t suppose a GOP State Committee resolution to demand resignation would hurt - other than the Committee better be sure that just in case Sasse chickens out and resigns the Governor better have a good replacement lined up. But, I just don’t see where such a demand adds much additional effect to the already suggested censure. Sasse will likely ignore the demand like a T. Rex brushing off a toothpick thrown at him.
These Rinos lifeblood is the money. With it I’d argue Sasse doesn’t even need the State GOP Committee. Plus the RNC and the NRSC will likely not abandon him. But, divert some of those donors to a good Primary candidate and we’d have a chance. MAYBE the Committee would pound the streets for such an opponent. That’s the sort of thing that can have some real teeth.
The Q solution - as detailed at Free Republic over the last three years - is to always do nothing.
Conservatives and the Republican Party have had no consequential leadership since we allowed the Democrats to destroy Newt Gingrich in 1995.
We stand for nothing, we defend nothing, and we never fight back when we are attacked by our own members or by others.
Cheney can put some fake Republicans in the primary, and three or four of them can dilute the support of the first opponent, the state senator who quickly announced a challenge to Cheney.
What NE needs are senators who would follow the precedent of Senators Carl Curtis and Roman Hruska. Those two never backed down.
UPDATE:
As of this evening, 3 February 2021, The “ambulance barn” in Culbertson, Nebraska, has been reserved for an Emergency Meeting of the Hitchcock County Republican Party, and for any Republican resident of State Central Committee District 315 - which includes the Nebraska counties of Chase, Dundy, Furnas, Gosper, Harlan, Hayes, Hitchcock, Perkins, and Red Willow.
The meeting is scheduled for 2 PM CT, 6 February 2021. The purpose is to obtain signatures on a petition, for passage of the Censure Resolution, at the Nebraska GOP State Central Committee meeting, which is to be held 13 February 2021 in Columbus, Nebraska.
So far, there are 30+ people who have RSVP,d me personally - and a likely equal number have responded to individual with whom I am working. I have received calls from as far east as Lincoln, and as far west as Imperial, Nebraska.
This evening, I spoke with a reporter from Nebraska Television, who requested a copy of the resolution, and will likely cover the meeting.
Notice was placed in the McCook Gazette, and was also covered by Rich Barnett on the Open Line Program, broadcast through McCook radio station 1300 KBRL AM.
I also discovered that there are now several Facebook pages dedicated to Sasse’s censure and removal from office.
This thing has really grown legs - and people, who never before involved themselves in politics, are leaving their apathy in the dust and asking how they may get involved.
Senator Sasse has no idea of the barn fire he ignited.
Mitt Sasse thinks he’s a latter day William Jennings Bryan, a veritable Boy Orator of the Platte. He’ll have less success running for president than the original.
