Democratic rule in D.C. amid the coronavirus pandemic could expose simmering tensions between New York’s two political titans — Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Sen. Chuck Schumer, the new Senate Democratic majority leader, sources who know both men said.
“Theirs is a working relationship at best,” said one top New York Democrat.
“There was enormous tension between the two in the spring,” the party insider said.
Cuomo publicly slammed Schumer last year for not backing changes to restructure the Medicaid program he was depending on to generate savings in the state budget.
Cuomo last March also blasted Schumer’s $2.1 billion bipartisan deal on COVID-19 relief with the Trump administration as “terrible” for New York state.
“I say to Sen. Schumer, it would be nice if he passed a piece of legislation that actually helped the state of New York,” Cuomo told reporters during the spat last spring.
Schumer at the time said he delivered plenty.
One veteran Albany and D.C. lobbyist described the Cuomo-Schumer relationship as a chilly “co-existence.”
“It’s not a warm, friendly relationship. You have two highly competitive, larger than life personalities. Cuomo comes from Queens. Schumer from Brooklyn,” the lobbyist said.
Schumer now is the Senate majority leader, with more leverage to deliver for New York.
But Cuomo continues to publicly keep the pressure on Schumer and President Biden to deliver for New York. He threatened to sue them if they don’t provide $15 billion in federal aid to help balance the state budget.
While discussing his budget plan last week, sources said Cuomo continued to needle Schumer, source said.
Cuomo lauded Schumer as “not just a friend of New York” but a “New Yorker” and expected Washington to be “fair” to the Empire State with Democrats in charge.

Oh my, possible infighting between Governor Kodos and Schumer. Seems a little early for the fun to get started, eh?
Kabuki theater?
What’s he trying to incite an erection?
No. Cuomo looks at Chucky as a piggy bank, and Chuck U resents Cuomo trying to stick him with the tab.
Not too many things better than a communist rat fight...
NYS is in a world of financial hurt. And these pinheads helped Deep State get rid of the one guy who could have helped them engineer an economic miracle and dig their way out of it.
There are going to be some awesome ‘Rat fights shortly.
Stock up on popcorn.
Hee hee!
See my above reply! I read your mind!!
This is like ISIS vs Al Qaeda. May both sides have great success.
So instead of savings through Medicaid restructuring he "reduced the surplus population" in the nursing homes?
This is amusing to me because it was easily predictable.
By any objective measure, Cuomo has presided over a complete train-wreck since Covid. He has economically destroyed his state, pushed the productive to move to other states, and driven business out of New York for good. He is now nothing more than a beggar.
The media loved comparison. DeSantis and Noem easily won in the eyes of everyone who does not watch the Cuomo News Network.
Stock up on popcorn.
: ) with real butter and real salt
yes. You’re being far too polite about what Cuomo did to the nursing home residents
there is a Nuremberg-type potential here
Kabuki theater?
You betcha!
Satans imps having a squabble.
Oh, they so deserve each other!

Something I’ve wondered about but have yet to see investigated is whether or not the WuFlu mortality rate for dual-eligible seniors in NYS is greater than it is for ill residents with Medicare and Medicare with MediGap.
My bet is Medicaid costs played a big role in Cuomo’s decision to send patients back and initially allowing positive staff to continue to report to work...
This is the problem when you try to rule under a different
party’s leadership. At some point that leadership may
change. Then who do you lay off all your failures on?
Even the Democrats get tired of idiots like Cuomo. Schumer
is one to talk though. Really creepy people...
New York, if you always vote one way, where is your leverage?
