WASHINGTON (AP) — A growing number of Republican senators say they oppose holding an impeachment trial, a sign of the dimming chances that former President Donald Trump will be convicted on the charge that he incited a siege of the U.S. Capitol.
House Democrats, who will walk the impeachment charge of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate on Monday evening, are hoping that strong Republican denunciations of Trump after the Jan. 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to bar Trump from holding office again. But GOP passions appear to have cooled since the insurrection, and now that Trump’s presidency is over, Republican senators who will serve as jurors in the trial are rallying to his legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.
“I think the trial is stupid, I think it’s counterproductive,” said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.. He said that “the first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it” because he believes it would be bad for the country and further inflame partisan divisions.

Perhaps not. The Senate will determine the rules for presentation of evidence. The House did not allow Trump to present a defense. If the Dem majority decides the accused cannot present evidence, Trump won’t have the forum.
Likely the the arm twisting is heavy to persuade 17 Republicans to vote against Trump. Those who have mistresses, drug addition, shady business deals, and other indiscretions are certainly vulnerable to pressure. The timing of the recent announcement the DOJ is ending its investigation of Senator Burr of NC is certainly interesting. Burr is retiring, could he have been persuaded to be one of the 17 in order to avoid prosecution? The evidence must have been strong, otherwise, why would he have resigned his chairmanship of the intelligence committee when the investigation of his insider trading was announced?
Likely also there are negotiations going on with Trump. McConnell and others may be telling him they won’t vote for conviction if he agrees not to run in 2024, which is the real goal of both parties. The Dems may be offering to call off the dogs (federal and state prosecutors) from his family and businesses if he agrees to simply fade away and stay out of public life.

Don’t think Trump will run in 2024 in any case. This trial is about something else, just not sure what.
I like the idea of 75 or 85 million thank you cards showing up in Mara Largo.
And an equal number of “step up and show yourself” cards to GOP reps and senators.

When the public demands particular action, what the public gets is a show. Recent example, Loeffler. She promised to challenge the election. That was before the special election. Reversed course on pretextual reason.
I think we pretty much know the politicians are globalists, with a handful of exceptions. They should do the right thing without being pressured to do the right thing.
If they have any hopes and aspirations for any sort of political future .... they darn well best oppose this shameful impeachment trial.
