I have read your comments with great interest & agree on many points.
My experience dates to 1976 when I was in graduate school as a semi-employed Vietnam vet. There were several Chinese girls from Taiwan in my class, most of them beautiful, and they shared many common beliefs. All told me they spoke Cantonese; their parents had fled from the communist takeover.
They regarded native Taiwanese as “country bumpkins” (their term).
They scoffed at our Bicentennial as “only two hundred years” and pointed to 5,000 years of Chinese culture.
The girls loved “Confucius say” jokes & I spent hours explaining the puns in both U.S. & British English.
They pointed out that “Zhong-guo” means “middle kingdom” as in the middle of the entire universe.
Ethnic Chinese born in the U.S. they called not “Chinese American” but “ABC’s” (American-born Chinese).
For Taiwan, R.O.C. declaring independence means to renounce all claims as the legitimate government of all of China. I can understand their viewpoint.
U.S. troops are “stupid warriors”? Guess the PLA is still smarting over their defeat by the NVA in ‘79.
Not to worry - the Senile Pedophile will give away the store to the CCP, soon.
They seem to have a unique combination of arrogance and cowardice.
Pretending to be the rightful rulers of a country 70 years after a commie revolution is pure bullsnuff.
They’re gonna luze Taiwan and they probably don’t even care because they consider themselves Chinese, not Taiwanese.
My prediction: we will luze 2 aircraft carriers live on CNN and then withdraw. The Chinese have been perfecting hypersonic missile targeting since the early 90s, and an aircraft carrier is a yuge thermal target surrounded by cold ocean.
China has been modernizing their weapons platforms and their standing army is perhaps 30x the size of Vietnam’s.
They can afford CASUALTIES as big as Vietnam’s entire army. VN defeat is inevitable.
The Vietnamese are the single most similar culture in the entire globe, to China.
The thing is, Vietnam does not want to be China.
They don’t.
The two countries share a number of significant similarities. However Vietnam does NOT want to be China.
The country is not a threat to China as things stand.
It is good. I honestly do not believe China will mess with the relationship.
Vietnamese do NOT want to be Chinese.
They just don’t.
China won’t mess with the current relationship.
You said the same thing 3 times. 3 times. 3 times.
And it was irrelevant all 3 times. VN may not wanna be China, but China wants their warm water port, China wants revenge for 1979, China wants regional hegemony. China wants a launching point for the reincorporation of their renegade province.
Figure it out.
And the SAD part... NO ONE will do a damn thing about it.
I don’t think so.
Vietnam has a large, VERY densely populated country.
China would be taking on a BUNCH of people, to acquire a relatively small country. And Vietnam, is already very experienced with fighting foreign occupation.
I do not think so.
Really.
Sorry, typo.
“relatively small, VERY densely populated country.”
