Is becoming a state really that easy?

D.C. is NOT a State— and cannot be made a State, as the Constitution specifically delineates what it is. They may petition for an Amendment to the Constitution which would have to be ratified by the States. Not a simple vote of Congress. No can do. SCOTUS then say the other 50 States have no Standing in challenging this FRAUD.

The statehood side won most recently. They vote and revote until they get the results they want.

I am sorry—I thought this was talking to Puerto Rico, not DC.

It requires a constitutional amendment. They pass it anyway. Virtue signaling. Hopefully, the Scaredy Cats of the US will toss it.

I agree, they will try to push for Puerto Rico statehood next so they can create more safe RAT seats in the House and Senate (even if the Puerto Ricans don’t want statehood). Some FReepers were saying PR’s voting habits are unpredictable? I would bet $100 both DC and Puerto Rico constantly send two RAT senators to Washington, and Puerto Rico will end up with 5-7 Congressional seats, and I’d expect Republicans to win maybe 2 of them in a best case scenario

All of northern va is deep blue so any part that went back to DC would help turn va red. I believe the area that was given and then taken back was Alexandria.

Is becoming a State really that easy?

No, but they can do it if they put their minds to it.

The big problem is Amendment XXIII which, unless repealed, will award three electors to the remaining Federal District (the White House, the Mall, the monuments, the Capitol and Supreme Court buildings), who will be appointed "in such manner as Congress shall by law direct".

In close Electoral College contests, this gives the party in power the chance to change the outcome without voting.

Residential DC as a State will automatically get 3 Electors, so the Electoral College will expand from 538 to 541.

But do you think Congress is going to give up their 3 Electors provided for by Amendment XXIII? Neither do I.

If each large blue city gets 2 senators, the senate may be lost forever.

PR gets a lot of benefits from being a territory and none of the responsibility. At one point, a US business could move to PR and avoid any corporate income tax. PR residents can move to US and become a citizen at any time.

Record says households in Puerto Rico have a median annual income of $20,296, which is less than the median annual US income of $61,937. Homeless still waiting for handouts from several earlier hurricanes and other disasters are among the lower than $20,296 families needing welfare there.

They are expecting the current taxpayers of the US to make up the extra 2/3 by special entitlements (not counting Medicare, Medicaid and other which is not income). Sounds like a good welfare scam to me.

In fact, in most states, we could just yank out the cities.

You are on to something. Confederation of America Cities: Two Senators and the enumerated required representatives based on combined population of cities.

...with the the district’s original 10 mi by 10 mi borders...

Interestingly, the Constitution says "over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square)." The current district is a 5 mile by 10 mile rectangle, essentially half of the constitutional allotment.

The portion of DC that contains just the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court is a rectangle of approximately 0.75 miles by 1.9 miles. Extending this to include the Lincoln Memorial makes it 2.6 miles.

The problem with shrinking the District of Columbia to just the acreage containing the Article I, II, and III institutions is that all the foreign embassies that are currently within Congressional administration (even though they are considered sovereign soil of the nation they represent) would now fall outside of their jurisdiction and be subject to the laws of a state (that is, road access, utilities, sewage, policing, etc.).

Congress would be giving up a lot of local power by ceding control of this land.

They can’t get rid of the electoral college so they just stack the House and Senate.

They no longer need the EC nor DC as a "state". Because: Dominion.
