Hundreds of registered Republicans have switched parties or became independents in Central Florida in the week since the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol by a pro-President Trump mob, elections supervisors say. The number is small compared with the tens of thousands of registered voters for each party. But even that amount of movement is unusual outside of any election or registration deadline, one elections expert said. “It’s probably very rare [to switch],” said Daniel A. Smith, the chair of political science at the University of Florida. “Generally, where we see the changes are from [having] no party affiliation to Republican or Democrat prior to an August primary or a presidential primary. “Some people are witnessing what has been going on and thinking about it in partisan terms, and it’s certainly possible that they would then go and change their party affiliation,” Smith added. In Orange County, 772 registered Republicans had left the party since Jan. 6 as of Thursday, according to supervisor Bill Cowles. Of that group, 465 became non-party affiliated and 122 became Democrats. The rest joined minor parties, including 155 who joined the Independent Party of Florida, an organization whose name has often been confused for being unaffiliated with a party. By comparison, 118 Democrats switched parties in Orange, with 67 becoming independent and 24 becoming Republicans. Orange has been trending blue for years, with Democrats making up about 382,000 voters and Republicans at about 225,000 voters. In Osceola County, 145 Republicans left the party since Jan. 6 as of Thursday, including 80 who switched to no affiliation, 33 who became Independent Party members, and 20 who became Democrats. The rest joined other parties. Only 29 Democrats left the party in that same time frame.

The reason Republicans are leaving the party is because the party leaders (and most of the US Senators and the US Supreme Court) refused to support President Trump and stop the steal.
Since the mass media does not actually talk to real rank and file Republicans (who don’t trust the mass media and would refuse to talk to them anyway), the writer of the article was completely clueless.
