AUSTIN, Texas - Gov. Greg Abbott shared a message to the City of Austin Wednesday on Twitter, saying that if the city doesn't reinstate the ban on homeless camping, "the state will do it for them."
Abbott's response comes after members of "Save Austin Now" turned in over 24,000 signed petitions Tuesday, hoping to reinstate Austin’s homeless camping ban by getting it on the May 2021 ballot. The first effort to reinstate the ban was ruled invalid back in August, and they decided to try again starting December 1.
"Contrary to what Austin leaders think no one has a right to urinate & defecate wherever they want," Abbott said on Twitter. "Homelessness promoted by Austin has also endangered public safety."

Ping.
Homelessness has reached it’s Austin City Limits?
Lol, good way to put it. But yes, definitely.
Better yet, create some opportunity zones for homeless camping. Like at a Hollywood actor’s house.
Drop them off at every Californians house that has moved to the area.
That should make them feel at home.
Was in Austin in Sept for the first time in years, was amazed, empty lot next to our hotel had a small village camped out, lots of tents under the overpass going through town. Garbage everywhere. The bats were cool and made up for the people.
Abbott for President 2024!
Drop them off at every Californians house that has moved to the area.
That should make them feel at home.
Love that idea!
Austin is the crap hole of Texas.
But San Antonio isn’t much better with the homeless.
But the thing with Austin, is those camps are 2 blocks from the Capitol. It makes the entire state look bad.
Bus them all to California. They deserve to be where they would be welcomed with open arms.
Good idea but the Mayor and his cronies love keeping them here, throwing untold millions of dollars at this problem that THEY created.
I thought Texas was seceding this year?
I like this, but I want to see Abbott do the same at the border. If you’re not born here, you stay on _THAT_ side of the border. If the “homeless” want to set up tents, they’ll find plenty forest about 20 miles north of Austin on I-35 towards Elgin. (wait..is that us290?) There’s also KOA Campground. I hear they have water and showers too.
I’d like to see them try that homeless trick in mexico...yeah, set up a tent in mexico city, see how long that lasts.
Nope. The 'Abbott shine' is definitely off.
His response to the china cold was a wimp-out.
The gal in South Dakota would be a better choice.
They may not be around for long. Flying chickens for the homeless people. Last visit to Austin, I thought it was a crappy town, except for the bats coming out from under the bridge, cool. But that was 5 years ago.
Go for it, Governor!!!!!
DeSantis would be better.
👍
Yup, I’ll support the gov on this one.
