Many journalists and political commentators have been pessimistic about the possibility of statehood for the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This seems to be primarily because, despite the recent Democratic victories in Georgia, moderate senators like Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), Diane Feinstein (D-Calif), and Angus King (I-Maine) continue to support the legislative filibuster. It is impossible to imagine Republican senators voting to give Democratic-leaning areas full representation, so the issue must be dead on arrival in the upper chamber. But in a recent CNN interview, Manchin himself provided evidence for why this thinking is all wrong......."

Don’t forget about Guam. It expects $trillion$ for floatation devices.
No. Look at BRexit and the punitive measures the EUSSR is taking.
Look at when NY took a space shuttle and Schmuck Screwmer laughed at Texas and said elections have consequences.
Expect Red State funds to be siphoned off for Blue State projects.
>but I expect the legislative filibuster to disappear.
Obviously, they are going to do that one issue at a time so they can say they aren’t doing that and to preserve the filibuster against future Republican majorities on issues they have not yet irrevocably settled in their own favor.
If it only takes 51 votes to make a new state, does that also mean it only takes 51 votes to unmake a state? Not that we would ever be in a position to have a say in the new country Oceania with elections that are 100% rigged and no legislature or court will ever object to a rigged election (that the communists steal).
Why blame Mitch? Blame Lin Wood, Steve Bannon, The Kraken, Loser Giuliani who can't win a lawsuit, and all the idiots who didn't vote in Georgia because they were too preoccupied about crying about elections already lost.
Agree about DC. If anything, do like they did for the Virginia portion of DC and put it back in the state of Maryland. Only a small portion of DC is where the Government is concentrated should be left as DC totally under Federal control with no representation.
If the Dems force the issue and grant statehood to anything, time for Texas to exercise its right to split up into 5 states.
Done deal.
I think DC statehood would have a ** winning ** SCOTUS fight.
Jimmy Carter commuted their sentences and one went to Cuba to receive a hero’s welcome from Fidel Castro.
And the media is silent about past attacks on Congress and what happened afterwards.
Bill Clinton also pardoned Puerto Rican terrorists and so did Barack Obama.
Seeing a trend here.
D.C. statehood is absurd. If they want to be in a state, then the solution is retrocession to Maryland, just like what was done for the Virginia portions of D.C. in the 1840s. Declare a federal zone around the White House, Capitol Hill, Capitol Mall Mall, etc. and give the rest of the s-—hole back to Maryland. Problem solved.
We should divide the states until we really have a vote..lol..sarc
Judging by our judicial system, who would have standing?
May as well vote to make each and every house, farm, ranch, mobile home, apartment and condo its own state.
Each of the Palestinian shitholes could be a state.
Only 50 votes needed to break up California into three states?
Don’t the states have to vote for statehood?
Why not add BC? That would make Alaska part of the contiguous states!
I believe the best defense is go after Representatives and, yes, Senators with recall elections when the fringe anti-populist agenda items rear their ugly heads. I might be wrong, but I don’t think a successful recall attempt could be run against Puerto Rican statehood or DC statehood. DC statehood is probably “none of my business” for most voters, and Puerto Rico enlarges our country. (These things also likely enlarge our debt too, but look at where we are).
These guys are going to overreach, and when they try to shove really unpopular legislation down the voters throats, that is when I believe we can push back and win.
Shrinking the borders of DC can be done by legislation. That’s how VA got its chunk back. The Constitution only provides a maximum area - no mention of a minimum.
Redefine DC as going from the White House to the Supreme Court, thus clearing the way Constitutionally for another bill to grant statehood to the area outside the new severely reduced federal district (after getting Maryland’s permission, mostly as a courtesy and a defense against lawsuits).
