Many journalists and political commentators have been pessimistic about the possibility of statehood for the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This seems to be primarily because, despite the recent Democratic victories in Georgia, moderate senators like Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), Diane Feinstein (D-Calif), and Angus King (I-Maine) continue to support the legislative filibuster. It is impossible to imagine Republican senators voting to give Democratic-leaning areas full representation, so the issue must be dead on arrival in the upper chamber. But in a recent CNN interview, Manchin himself provided evidence for why this thinking is all wrong......."

The issue here is raw political power. Mob power. The Constitution is a two-bit whore to Democrats. They will do it and if the SCOTUS objects the court will be packed until it agrees.
What rules were followed to admit Alaska and Hawaii? Didn’t see those two admissions of new states mentioned in the article.
“DC statehood is illegal.”
Oh, that’s cute. You think laws matter to the left?
Chadguay? That’s a country?
I knew that, I just forgot!//
Speaking of secession, remember the Puerto Rico independence terrorists who shot up the US Congress in 1954:

This Puerto Rico statehood idea could get amusing...as long as you are not in Congress!
Admission of DC as a state should require a constitutional amendment, as it would conflict with the 23rd Amendment. This amendment gives three electoral votes to DC. As the Constitution requires that the federal seat of government NOT be in any state, the area around the federal seat would be the new “DC” ( Douglass Commonwealth). The new state would have three electoral votes based on one man-one vote. Because of the 23rd Amendment, the federal seat would have its 3 electoral votes, meaning the residents of the federal seat ( the POTUS and family) would still have three votes. This would be inconsistent with one man-one vote.
The residents of DC should have a voice in the Senate, but that could be given by having them vote in Maryland. Maryland donated the land which is now DC.
The need for a constitutional amendment has been recognized over the years by all administrations. Last year the dems passes a bill for DC statehood which also recognized this.
“Why stop there? let’s get Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chadguay while we’re at it.”
Don’t forget Mexico. Hey, if we’re going to take all Mexico’s people, least we can do is make them a state.
Will be a mute point once the NWO takes hold.
I think DC statehood would have a SCOTUS fight.
4 more Sinners I mean Senators for the Demonrats.
Isn’t Puerto Rico some what of a welfare state? American taxpayers are to shore that territory up? What does Puerto Rico bring to the table that they don’t already or America have? More corrupt politicians is not a plus for either.
It just the same blather applied to anything for which the Dems want to shove aside any rules or laws in their way while pretending to uphold the rule or law they are trashing and have all their sycophants nod approval and repeat to opponents with absolute sincerity as if it were a legitimate argument and not just the dishonest expediency it is.
The supremacist court gods in black dresses will tell you that you do not have standing to challenge it.
I absolutely REFUSE to fly an ersatz “American” flag with 52 stars on it. It isn’t going up either of my Flagpoles...
“Thanks Mitch!”
Totally agree. McConnell has been a disaster for Republicans. He, more than anyone else has been responsible for preventing conservative Republicans from being elected. He, more than any other Republican is responsible for our 23 trillion dollar debt. He, more than any other Republican, is responsible for the senate blocking conservative political nominees. He, more than any other Republican, is responsible for the senate’s betrayal of Trump. McConnell is a disaster.
Also, we should not assume that Puerto Rico would be a dem seat. While the current governor is a democrat, the last one, and 2 of the last 4, have been Republicans.
Statehood for Taiwan NOW!
Good Grief! More ignorant leftist clowns making opinion pieces that have never read the constitution or the convention notes!
No, you can’t add/make/vote DC as a state. By design & codified in the Constitution... the constitution established DC as the Federal seat of government.
The prohibition of statehood for the capital is enshrined in the Constitution.
Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17 of the document reads, “The Congress shall have Power To …exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States.”
We’re talking about Democrats. What is their biggest problem? Not enough corrupt politicans. How will they rectify that? You have your answer.
What’s going to stop them?
