Statehood for D.C. and Puerto Rico only needs 50 votes
The Week ^ | Jon Walker

Many journalists and political commentators have been pessimistic about the possibility of statehood for the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This seems to be primarily because, despite the recent Democratic victories in Georgia, moderate senators like Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), Diane Feinstein (D-Calif), and Angus King (I-Maine) continue to support the legislative filibuster. It is impossible to imagine Republican senators voting to give Democratic-leaning areas full representation, so the issue must be dead on arrival in the upper chamber. But in a recent CNN interview, Manchin himself provided evidence for why this thinking is all wrong......."

This should be plenty of gasoline on the fire of the secession movement.

I would think that something as transformative as adding states would require a two-thirds vote. But that would be too commonsensical.

No, it needs 51 votes, but ties are settled by the Vice President.

A Constitutional amendment, not Congressional legislation, is needed to make DC an State...IMO.

Needs 67 votes, plus 3/4ths of the state legislatures.

DC statehood is illegal.

It would cause an interesting Constitutional question, wouldn't it?

Also it would seem as if the existing states should have a say in new ones being added.

Divine Intervention can save the nation.

Dem senators in states with GOP governors who could immediately name a new senator to fill a vacancy.

Arizona - 2
Georgia - 2
New Hampshire - 2
Ohio - 1
West Virginia - 1

My reading of the constitution says the article is correct. There is the issue of filibuster, but I expect the legislative filibuster to disappear.

I don’t think the constitution supports statehood for Washington DC.

Stealing elections is illegal.

“Illegal” is _very_ small comfort these days.

If the ‘secession’ idea becomes serious, I’m in.
The main question will be who separates from whom?

Will someone from a Red area be able to work in a Blue area?
Can they own property, if so how much?
Will their health insurance, their license to carry, their voter registration, marriage license, college degree be recognized in any state?

Today’s Dems are no where near mature enough to ponder these kind of questions without going full partisan.
