This article was posted on Free Republic years ago and considering the state of the Nation, I think it's worth posting again. It illustrates the mathematical techniques that would have been used by the British to identify the "conspirators" during the Revolutionary war, if cell phones existed. Don't think for a moment that this is not occurring today and possibly with us.
London, 1772.
I have been asked by my superiors to give a brief demonstration of the surprising effectiveness of even the simplest techniques of the new-fangled Social Networke Analysis in the pursuit of those who would seek to undermine the liberty enjoyed by His Majesty’s subjects. This is in connection with the discussion of the role of “metadata” in certain recent events and the assurances of various respectable parties that the government was merely “sifting through this so-called metadata” and that the “information acquired does not include the content of any communications”. I will show how we can use this “metadata” to find key persons involved in terrorist groups operating within the Colonies at the present time. I shall also endeavor to show how these methods work in what might be called a relational manner.

That focuses on the rifle behind every blade of grass or the needle in the haystack albeit when multiple haystacks are involved.
It fails at finding the single blade of grass or piece of hay that looks like all the others except it triggers a mass casualty event.
That’s a common problem with thinking if you only have enough data and get the detail and bring superb powers of analysis you can find the problem.
Now here’s a little story I’ve got to tell
About three bad brothers you know so well
It started way back in history
With Adrock, (M.C.A.) and me (Mike D.)
I had a little horse named Paul Revere
Just me and my horsy and a quart of beer
Riding across the land kicking up sand
Sheriff’s posse on my tail ‘cause I’m in demand
One lonely Beastie I be
All by myself without nobody
The sun is beating down on my baseball hat
The air is gettin’ hot the beer is getting flat
Lookin’ for a girl I ran into a guy
His name is M.C.A., I said, “Howdy” he said, “Hi”
What?
Obviously the programming hasn’t taken. America was founded in 1619 and has stayed exactly the same ever since.
Ignore the millions of people of color risking life and limb to get here.
I heard he was locked up in an Indian reservation for a while.
They used to come here because they wanted to be a part of America.
Now they come here to take over America.
If you are a deplorable, more than enough to get a search warrant, then without ffl records I can tell what guns you own and how much ammo you have. Wouldn't need ffl records anyway if you are a concealed carry permit holder or in a registration state. Only possible exception is if you never bought anything except with cash, and only from individuals. Then I'll have to look a little harder but I still with get enough for the no-knock.
I never metadata I didn’t like.
When they come after the first million gun owners, what will the other forty million gun owners do?
THAT’s the question.
They can’t get all 40M in one swoop.
Since people constantly post pictures online of their new purchases and insist on carrying tracking devices around with them, it isn’t hard to use FB to target and identify those who have made purchases even if they didn’t get concealed permits. They also make funny posts about boating accidents...etc... I think you know this already though!
I worked on a campaign here in Houston and would love to talk to you some time if you ever feel so inclined. Let me know.
