On Jan. 7, Simon & Schuster canceled their contract with Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., for his book “The Tyranny of Big Tech,” originally scheduled to be published June 22. In an Instagram post, the publisher wrote that it took this action “[a]fter witnessing the disturbing, deadly insurrection that took place in Washington, D.C.”
Hawley was one of the most outspoken congressional supporters of President Donald Trump’s election fraud lies. He was the first senator to object to the counting of the Electoral College votes and, in a now infamous photo, cheered on the pro-Trump crowd gathered outside the Capitol.
Following his use of “woke mob,” I’m sure Hawley is gearing up next to hide behind the buzzword phrase “cancel culture,” when in fact as a member of the Senate, he has one of the most powerful megaphones in the whole country. He hasn’t been canceled; his book contract has. And that’s an important difference.
It’s very possible that Hawley’s contract contained an increasingly common morality clause, which would enable Simon & Schuster to terminate his contract for actions deemed unseemly or unethical.
I may disagree mightily with Hawley and his ilk but I support their right to express themselves within the bounds of the law. But a book deal is not equivalent to “free speech.” It’s a business contract between an author and a publisher, and therefore subject to the specific terms within said contract. Or, as Mark Cuban put it on Twitter: “Sometimes people decide not to do business with you. It’s their decision.”
The First Amendment is alive and well, and will continue to be. I applaud Simon & Schuster for taking a stand and not supporting an author who clearly has shown total disregard for the sanctity of his own workplace and the safety of our country.

Another far left, sexual deviant like her president, Hop Sing Xiden.
The publisher didn’t cancel the deal because Hawley filed a challenge to the electoral vote certification.
The deal was canceled because the GOP lost control of the Senate ... which means the publisher’s parent company (Viacom/CBS, I believe) doesn’t need to waste their money bribing him anymore.
LOL!
There they go again. No matter what story is printed, they always have to stick that propaganda in.
Bite me Rachel. You are clearly an idiot.
He looks like a nice guy.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR... she is an evil minion of the communists satanic plan. Why would we care what she says?
The lie must not only be BIG enough, it has to be repeated OFTEN enough.
The aren’t going to change the minds of any Trump supporters, but the ANTI-Trump constituency is so stupid that they have to be reminded several times a day.
So a pornographer lectures one on redacting freedom of speech...?
Perhaps, but where is she wrong? If a business decides to cancel their working relationship with you then you can moan and cry all you want, but it's not a First Amendment issue and it isn't censorship. The Constitution protects you from the government, not business.
Really? Minority party Senators never have books published? It is more than that.
I agree. The only recourse to a private company’s censorship is not to use their products anymore.
I would not want the government to force them to publish conservative stuff anymore than I would want the government to force us to listen to liberal stuff.
That is power I don’t want the government to have.
Erotica writing teacher?
nbc “news”? .
Her? Who’d ever be “erotica” with THAT?
LMFAO
That’s her only point.
The funny thing is, favored minorities have more protections than unfavored majorities today. Try doing this to a black or a Jew or a lesbian, and see if a private business does not get sued under “civil rights” laws.
Do you think they would have canceled this if the GOP retained control of the Senate? No way.
