In the first week of January, Telegram surpassed 500 million monthly active users. After that it kept growing: 25 million new users joined Telegram in the last 72 hours alone. These new users came from across the globe – 38% from Asia, 27% from Europe, 21% from Latin America and 8% from MENA.
This is a significant increase compared to last year, when 1.5M new users signed up every day. We've had surges of downloads before, throughout our 7-year history of protecting user privacy. But this time is different.
People no longer want to exchange their privacy for free services. They no longer want to be held hostage by tech monopolies that seem to think they can get away with anything as long as their apps have a critical mass of users.
With half a billion active users and accelerating growth, Telegram has become the largest refuge for those seeking a communication platform committed to privacy and security. We take this responsibility very seriously. We won’t let you down.
Those of you who have used Telegram for the last several years know we’ve been consistent both when it comes to defending private data and to improving our apps. For those of you who just joined and are wondering what Telegram stands for, I’d like to quote my post from 2018:
You – our users – have been and will always be our only priority. Unlike other popular apps, Telegram doesn’t have shareholders or advertisers to report to. We don’t do deals with marketers, data miners or government agencies. Since the day we launched in August 2013 we haven’t disclosed a single byte of our users' private data to third parties.
We operate this way because we don’t regard Telegram as an organization or an app. For us, Telegram is an idea; it is the idea that everyone on this planet has a right to be free.
Signal was an old WWII Wehrmacht publication title. Might be a little too close to the Nazis if you ask me.
I’m thinking Signal is Dorsey’s open source alternative but where he gets to spy on chats in the cloud. A lot of tech companies including Microsoft were under pressure years ago to go open source in whole or part.
I thought we were walking away from Apple? Right?
Cute animated icons at website.

The link is for mobile apps Android and Apple. Here’s the one for Windows PCs:
If you’re able and ambitious, you can adapt Telegram’s open source code to a Linux phone.
Good luck.
You’re welcome.
I have a Samsung Tab S6 Lite 10” tablet.
I just installed from the Playstore.
but is this app putting money in Apples pockets?
It’s a free app. I don’t think they are paying any more than any other free app listed on Apple playstore.
Yeah, I have telegram. It’s Signal that won’t even show up on the Google play store for me. Does Signal require cell service? My Tab has internet only.
I am really dumb. I signed up and landed on the Parler Hub and can’t seem to go anywhere else. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks.
Isn’t that MeWe?
Look for Twitter and FB stocks to continue down trend.
“...Since the Wall came down I have met a lot of former Soviets. In general, they love Liberty and Freedom even more than most Americans...”

Well, Sergei Brin may be one if the exceptions that proves the rule. He is most definitely NOT “freedom loving” when it comes to those with whom he disagrees.
Nope.
Where does Telegram get money from?
With more than 100 million monthly active users, Telegram, is an increasingly popular messaging app around the world and in Singapore. It relies mostly on donations from its wealthy patron Pavel Durov, a global entrepreneur who founded Russia's biggest social networking platform.
Actually they now have 500 million active users, which is just wonderful. The good news is, because it's Russian, they can't be cancleed by the deranged big tech evil doers from Silicon Valley.
I'll l take Telegram over Orwellian, evil , Zuckerbeg controlled WhatsApp or Facebook an day any time.
It's not Telegram that is busy stealing elections round the world. It's Facebook and Zuckerberg who are doing that.
Brin did not really suffer much under communism he was only a kid when his dad brought him to America.
It's quite different for those who grew up and lived and suffered under communism in the Soviet Union.
Right now, the Dems, fake news media and big tech are worse than the Soviet Union was when Brezhnev , Andropov and Gorbachev were in power.
Well we are about to have our own Chernenko as President.
