Hell, you just described me. I’m as plain vanilla as one can get.
There are lots of advantages to blending in with the crowd when disaster strikes.
For starters, by not drawing attention to yourself, you’ll be able to move more quickly and easily through the crowd
without alerting others to the fact that you are prepared to handle the situation.
Also, by blending in and appearing to be among the unprepared, you are less likely to make yourself a target of those in desperation
who may try and take your survival gear off you by force.
The gray man theory is really about protecting yourself and your family by concealing the fact
that you are indeed prepared to survive in the face of disaster.

If Pres. Trump and the military don't act definitively within the next 48 hours, then I believe *all* anger and activism should take place only locally, only in the presence of those you trust totally, and never in the presence of electronic devices. (In fact, these are really habits to adopt right now.)
I do believe, however, that it would continue to be feasible and constructive to engage in mockery and ridicule - which can be very powerful.
For example, earlier today I mentioned on social media that gas prices were starting to move up towards "Democrat levels", and expressed my belief that they would go to at least $5.50/gal. Or, when Democrats begin to complain about the state of things, my standard answer will be "welcome to the 'new normal'" - use their own jargon against them.
I also plan to "starve the beast". Don't eat out, find low cost things you enjoy doing at home. I'm thinking of putting an in-window A/C in one room only so that I don't have to cool the entire house during the summer - that stems the flow of dollars into quasi-governmental energy companies (and makes me physically tougher). If they respond by increasing energy prices it will my neighbors who come out with torches and pitchforks.
I may look for jobs that pay me as much with equity as with dollars (my kids are up-and-out, so I can make this work for me). This allows me to starve the beast from income tax revenue, and yet may allow me to be substantially better off at some later time.

I can find nothing in the President’s various comments that can plausibly be interpreted as a call to violence. Impassioned speech, unsubstantiated claims of fraud and victory, and an enthusiastic rallying of his supporters, I can find all of those things. But at no point does he call upon the people assembled to commit criminal acts

Was that actually a success for them? It’s not attributed to them, but it’s one of their fantasies. If anything, it showed the the Right could angrily and physically take over at any time. Your mere presence, even if you didn't agree with the speakers, put you on their list for further contact, asking for funds, phone spamming, etc., etc.
The damage at the Capital last week demonstrated how "Mob Mentality" can get quickly out of hand, even within a peaceful protest.
It only take a few agitators to get center stage and defeat the purpose and the message which you wish to convey.
Most of the peaceful protesters present did not damage any property, but look who all got the media attention (!), and the attention wasn't on peaceful attendees.

If i need to make a clarification or expound on what i said, let me make it rather than have others do so and put their words in my mouth.
My point on being a grey man is for multiple reasons. It is about people deciding and picking their battles. It is about what is crossing a personal red line for them. Some people are solo in this world. Some have friends and are organized. Not everyone makes the same move at once for the same things. Not all the troops land in the first wave.

I assure you, not every shocking act we witness in the coming days will be false flags. They have gone too far, and they believe they’re prepared for the blowback.
Their provocation and suppression will either result in us rising up, or being silenced forever.
