BRADENTON, Fla. - Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke about COVID vaccinations in Manatee County on Thursday but opened his news conference talking about Wednesday's violent pro-Trump protests in Washington.
Protesters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday and forced lawmakers into hiding in an attempt to overturn the results of the election.
DeSantis said he "100 percent" supports the right to protest but said "the minute that crosses over, there needs to be penalties."
He called the actions of protesters "totally unacceptable."
"Those folks need to be held accountable," he said. "It doesn't matter what banner you're flying under, the violence is wrong, the rioting and disorder is wrong. and we're not going to tolerate it in Florida."
U.S. Capitol Police said that 14 arrests were made, with three of those arrested from Florida.
"You can have strong views, you can be disappointed in the election, you can be disappointed in whatever," DeSantis said. "But you can't just go in and ransack public places like that."

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of a timely Trial by Jury:
For failing to enforce our boarders and ensure that aliens crossing our boarders are peaceful law-abiding individuals.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A government whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our elected officials. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their courts to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. President Trump made a fine speech in the Ellipse.
President Trump encouraged the crowd to march to the capitol, which also seems fine to me.
How different would things be if he had said, “We march to the Capitol. Everyone must stay outside and peacefully demonstrate. No one enter the Capitol, OK? If you see anyone entering, or causing trouble, that’s ANTIFA trying to make us look bad, right? Stay away from those people. Don’t follow them. Stay outside and show people what good citizens you are. Let’s go!”
