Opinion writer Bari Weiss got chased out of The New York Times for her political views — not because she’s an uncompromising conservative, but because she is a moderate.
In our team-sports era of politics as tribal warfare, we’re expected to be all-in for one side or the other. Figures such as Weiss or slightly nonconforming public figures such as author J. K. Rowling (a liberal feminist who expresses some reservations about transgender orthodoxy) or Goya CEO Robert Unanue (whose firm is being boycotted because he said something nice about Donald Trump) are a problem for the cheap moralists and fanatics because they complicate the narrative, forcing partisans to face up to the fact that not every critic of transgender ideology is a right-wing evangelical bigot from Oklahoma and that some Trump supporters are Spanish-American businessmen with deep ties to the Latino community.
We say that we cherish moderates and independents and prefer them to mindless partisans, but, in reality, we punish them. Why? When it comes to our own preferences, we prefer vehemence to moderation and loyalty to independence. We are all Barry Goldwater now, insisting that moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue.

No. They hate everybody.
One of the greatest tragedies of the #woke movement is that it shuts out not only countering voices but any voice that seeks compromise.
It’s all or nothing, and they’re constantly redefining what “all” is.
Little did some of us realize 50+ years ago when swearing the oath to the enlistment guy (my dad swore me in) that the domestic enemy would be the biggest threat to this country. Sorry. 😯
The “moderates” are Mensheviks. The radicals will dispose of them and then their real enemy will be us.
Pretty much the enemy for many right-wing purists.
The left always eat their own. Bill Maher (a major leftist, but not as extreme as AOC and others) has been talking about this for years. In fact, some of those lunatics are so crazy, they’re turning on people like Bernie Sanders because he’s not extreme enough for them.
Was there ever a Conservative voice at the nyt ? Doubtful
Conservatives are irrelevant. It’s better for them to focus on moderates.
Opus?
they have their weapons for dealing with conservatism. Keep them busy with tax cuts/economics and worrying about the Middle East. If they start to get uppity, just accuse them of racism/sexism/homophobia/etc... That ends whatever they were talking about. This is assuming that there are “conservatives” who haven’t been completely bought off by their donor class (which is largely the same as the “conservative” donor class). The Left has political representation; the middle even has political representation in a way; the Right doesn’t.
Bret Stephens. The best they could scrape off the sidewalk outside the failed National Review.
We are all Barry Goldwater now, insisting that moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue …That is the RINO mantra in so many words.
Everybody hates Moderates.
The world’s shortest book: “Great Moderates in History”
I believe this was well known in the 1960s. The student radicals did not like LBJ or Hubert Humphrey or the other Liberals. The student radicals wanted extreme change and they knew that the old guys in the establishment who would seek some sort of moderate solution were just going to be in the way.
The proper model was first rolled out in the French Revolution and then perfected by Stalin — purge, purge, purge. Purge your enemies. Purge your friends. Purge anyone who isn’t perfect in your eyes.
the left wackos are not the majority in this country.. they are the loudest..and they inserted themselves where it counts..
education system
courts
businesses
lawyers
and they don’t care who they step on ...
and one of the most ridiculous things they have done.. is to say amen and awomen.. they are that ignorant and don’t know it.
Even moderates hate moderates, once their lives get uncomfortable thanks to giving tacit approval of leftism for just a little too long.
Both sides hate moderates. Moderates are the ones who say “yeah but here’s what’s wrong with your candidate...” and make valid points. True believers from the other side don’t bother them, they’re just the other side. But people who can criticize their candidates in a way they listen to, that bugs em.
I don’t see this as any different than Republicans..
I expect Democrats to be rats who hate this country.
I would like to think Republicans love this country and are willing to fight for it and all it’s traditions...
How many people like Mitt Romney, The Bush Clan, Neo-Cons, and Never Trumpers would you piss on if they were on fire ??
