Russia is planning to flight test its new intercontinental ballistic missile which it claims is capable of destroying an area the size of France.
The RS-18 Sarmat will be capable of unleashing ten large thermonuclear warheads or 16 smaller ones, or a combination of both, to overwhelm enemy missile defences, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence.
The 100-ton strategic missile is said to be able to travel around 6,200 miles and has the capacity to wipe out areas the size of Texas or France.
Each of the warheads are allegedly capable of being aimed at a different target. The development comes as Russia's defence minister reported to President Vladimir Putin that a new hypersonic weapon of intercontinental range became operational in December following years of tests.
The testing of the Sarmat missile has faced a number of delays but now officials say it will enter service with Russia's Strategic Missile Forces in 2022.
Alexey Krivoruchko, the country's Deputy Minister of Defence told military newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda that flight tests of the missile are imminent.
'I would like to note that today the Sarmat missile ejection tests have been completed with a positive result,' he said.
'In the near future, we will begin flight tests of this missile system.'
The ejection tests, or drop tests, limit the firing to the first-stage engine forcing the missile out of the silo into the air.

Have they plugged the leak in the ISS yet ?
Is the Cold War back on?
Peacekeeper ICBM. Until CONgress traded it away - for nothing.
Yes.
I’m sure the Russians would build an exterior display for their most secret weapons.
Bulls**t.
What kind of fallout do you get from a women that could destroy 250,000 square miles? Seems like the planet would be uninhabitable.
If you pack 10 warheads on it in will not go anywhere near 6200 miles.
“What kind of fallout do you get from a women that could destroy 250,000 square miles?”
My ex wife came pretty damned close.
L
Yeah, but no.
6,000 mile range from an ICBM is pretty standard. The Peacekeeper missile system was said to be capable of carrying 10 warheads as well.
There’s a little problem with that whole saturation bombardment scheme though. “Destroying” an area the size of Texas or France isn’t going to happen with a single strike, even if they built a system to deliver 100 or 160 warheads. The “throw” distance just isn’t there, unless you release your miRVs way too early, screwing up the targeting.
Texas is a big place.
Wouldn’t it be fun to shoot the test down?
But we shouldn’t take advantage of our navigational s/w exploits until the real payload. No reason to alert them during a test.
;)
They’re going to fire it from their mighty aircraft carrier! Oh wait...
“capable” of destroying an area the size of France?
Been on, with Russia and China closer than they’ve ever been, both militarily and economically. The basic alliance the West is up against is Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela, and North Korea. Russia and China have been staging massive joint war games since 2005, in obvious preparation for war with us and our allies.
Should - God forbid! - biden become president, we'll find out from either one of the next two in the line of succession...
Did you notice how slow that thing is?
Lol
