Lindsey bucks McConnell: $2,000 payments 'not socialism'

Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) pushed back Friday on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) characterization of $2,000 coronavirus relief payments to Americans as “socialism for the rich.”

“With all due respect to my Republican colleagues, a $2k direct payment for individuals and families who are struggling is not socialism,” Graham tweeted. “In my view it is necessary in the times in which we live.”

Last month, congressional leaders reached a long-sought deal on a new coronavirus package that included $600 checks for taxpayers, though both Democrats and President Trump have called for the amount to be increased to $2,000.

The House has passed a stand-alone bill increasing the payments, but McConnell has signaled it is going nowhere in the Senate.

"We do not need to let the Speaker of the House do socialism for rich people in order to help those who need help," McConnell said Thursday after blocking the measure for the third consecutive days.

McConnell has introduced a proposal that would tie the larger checks to tech and electoral provisions also supported by Trump, but the measure is unlikely to reach the floor before the Senate’s session ends Sunday

Sure the hell isn’t socialism. It’s a rebate. McConnell is an idiot.

Does anyone here wonder why Pelosi got the severed pig’s head and McConnell didn’t?

On its face, it looks like Antifa is happier (for some reason) with McConnell than with Pelosi.

How can it be socialism? It’s our freaking money to begin with.

Rebate? It’s very minor compensation for a government taking.

I’d love for them to give back at least 10 grand I paid last year. I’ll leave 4 for military.

McConnell never had a problem with socialism for corporate interests and foreign countries.

If that’s what it is, it should be directed to those who actually had something taken. Instead, it’s directed to everyone who made less than a certain amount in a year. It is neither a rebate nor compensation. It is a means-tested welfare benefit.

If it’s a rebate, then why is it being paid to people who pay no taxes, and being withheld from people who pay the most taxes?

It’s not socialism, but it is certainly welfare.

I don’t understand why McConnell opposed these checks. Politically, it is bad for GA Republican Senators and I cannot for the life of me understand what advantage McConnell gets by opposing them. Sure the deficit increases, but that deficit will be Biden’s problem. Politically, it is a very bad move by McConnell and if the GA Republican Senators lose, he will be blamed and driven out as Republican Senate leader. It just doesn’t make sense unless, some deep pocket McConnell Donor has bought him.

I found out something interesting with the $600 compared to the $1200 earlier in the year. The starting income for the reduction in check is the same, and the ramp is the same which means the maximum allowed income is different.

For example, for singles you start getting a reduced payment if you make over $75,000. The reduction is still $1 for every $20 of overage. But that means you hit $0 at $87,000 of income instead of $99,000.

I don’t understand why any Republican is not opposed to this massive giveaway. We used to be against giving welfare checks to people who don’t actually need it.

I just wish McConnell had found religion much earlier and opposed other wastes and handouts of our tax dollars.
