SCOTT JOPLIN: “TREEMONISHA”Not content with being the King of Ragtime, Scott Joplin decided to try his hand at a symphony and a piano concerto. Neither work materialized, and no sketches were ever found.
His first opera, “A Guest of Honor,” was performed in St. Louis in 1903 as a dress rehearsal in a dance hall. It was well received but not well enough to interest a producer. The score was lost and constitutes one of the great musical mysteries of the 20th Century.
By 1909 as ragtime was beginning to lose popular appeal, Joplin began work on a second opera, “Treemonisha.” By 1911 the score was complete, rejected by publishers and self-published by Joplin. The idea of an opera by a black ragtime composer was a bridge too far for the sensibilities of the era. There was one performance of the opera in 1915 in a hall in Harlem in the form of a rehearsal. There were no costumes, no lighting and no orchestra. Joplin himself played the piano. It was a disastrous flop, and it began Joplin’s slow slide into insanity, propelled by his tertiary syphilis.
In 1971, 54 years after Joplin’s death, the first collection of Joplin’s works was published, all part of the great ragtime revival shepherded by Joshua Rifkin, Max Morath, William Bolcom and Gunther Schuller. The first performance of “Treemonisha” was a semi-professional affair at Morehouse College in Atlanta with the assistance of the Atlanta Symphony conducted by Robert Shaw. The Houston Grand Opera, always noted for its willingness to take chances, hosted the first professional performance in 1975. This was recorded for posterity and marketed as a analog disk, CD and VHS tape by DGG. It was broadcast on PBS in 1976. Regrettably, the video version has never been transferred to DVD format.
The plotline is basically the biblical Moses story with a young black woman playing the Moses role, leading her people to freedom and equality in the era following the Civil War. The musical numbers feature ragtime, songs in the post-Civil War sentimental style, barbershop quartet, call-and-response from the black church and even a bit of African tribal chant. The characters may be cardboard, but the music is exceptional. The biggest surprise is Joplin’s gift for choral writing. Carmen Balthrop as Treemonisha is truly amazing, and her way with the high notes will make your screen go blurry The choreography is a standout.
The VHS version was transferred to You Tube with subtitles in Portuguese. Ignore the subtitles, and you have a wonderful 85 minute viewing experience.

Haven’t had a serious ice storm for nearly seven years, so there are six seasons worth of woodstove ash ready for spreading.
