Gov. Tom Wolf announced Wednesday that he will lift some temporary restrictions on Pennsylvania businesses, including a suspension of indoor dining at restaurants, on Jan. 4.
The news conference comes days before restrictions the governor has imposed on businesses are slated to expire. Wolf said those measures will indeed end on the scheduled expiration date of Jan. 4.
Earlier this month, Wolf imposed temporary restrictions on businesses, including a three-week ban on indoor dining at restaurants. Wolf also has ordered the closure of entertainment venues, including casinos, theaters and concert halls. Retailers and most other businesses are restricted to 50% of indoor capacity. The governor also suspended high school and youth sports.
The governor said those short-term restrictions can expire due to some success in limiting the spread of the coronavirus. Wolf noted the decline in new infections in recent days and a drop in the rate of positive tests for COVID-19.
“Our mitigation efforts over the past several weeks have done what they were intended to do,” Wolf said.
The governor said the rate of hospitalizations and deaths remains too high. But he said given the flattening of cases, he said it appears the state’s hospitals have enough capacity to care for those infected with COVID-19.
“The hope is the flattening we’re seeing right now will continue into January,” Wolf said.
Wolf said coronavirus-related regulations remain in place. The state’s order to wear masks or facial coverings remains in place, Wolf said, and there are some limits on the size of gatherings, based on the size of venues.
The governor and health secretary urged residents to continue to wear masks and practice social distancing.
“This does not mean we are out of the woods,” Wolf said.
Restaurants and businesses have been anxious to see if the restrictions will expire as scheduled.
Nearly 6,000 people are being treated in hospitals for COVID-19 and health care officials have said they are worried about having enough staffing to deal with the influx of patients.
The number of deaths has risen sharply in recent weeks. More than 15,000 deaths have been tied to COVID-19, and 5,000 of those fatalities have occurred within the last five weeks.
The number of cases has dropped in recent days, but the state is still reporting several thousand new infections on a daily basis. More than 630,000 people have contracted the coronavirus since the pandemic began.

FReepmail me to be added to the list.
Needs the tax money, but then, who’s working?
Probably, the present ICU data looks good for patients and bad for Blue State Emperors posing as governors.
Disobedience is spreading in PA. I also hope Wolf fears a little for his life.
Disobedience needs to continue despite what they do.
Forceful resistance and offensive strategies are called for.
Because “science” aka Biden Presidency
His mission was to get Biden elected. Now, he can wait for a lucrative appointment by Joe Biden and Company.
Polls must have shown bad news for reelection!!!
He wants his leftist thugs available for riot and mayhem on the 6th January.
It will not be the cake walk he thinks this time.
The natural ebb and flow of the case count and hospitalizations has had nothing to do with the lockdowns, but that wasn't what they were intended to do now, was it?
His lockdowns did nothing but guarantee a lot of low end workers got shafted once again... This man is a disgrace...
He need forcibly removed from the governors mansion by a mob, and his head left on a pike to remind all other arrogant politicians they are NOT in charge.
The political class no longer fears those they govern, and until they do, don’t expect things to get any better.
He isn’t up for re-election.. this is his 2nd term... he’s a tool... in every way, and always has been...
In simpler times he would have been dragged from the governors mansion by an angry mob by now.
Wolf is a dangerous lame duck.
PA Constitution limits him to two terms so we have 24 months to go until he hits the dustbin of history.
Until then he can raise a lot of hell.
He should have been dragged from the governors mansion by a mob long ago
He should. I’m starting to hear more people besides me talking about tarring and feathering him, and Corporal Klinger.
The King says “let them have a little gruel...now grovel before me.”
I would pitch in to help tar and feather the guy.
