Did you realize that “Tiki bars are a beverage industry mainstay – with a painful and underexamined past” requiring “reclaiming” and “repair”? That’s the sour message on the front of the New York Times Sunday Business section, written and researched by Sammi Katz and illustrated in mock-retro-advertising style by Olivia McGiff. An online headline actually read “History of Tiki Bars and Cultural Appropriation.”
On its eternal quest to ruin innocent pleasures, the Times is suffering a social justice hangover and is passing the headache to its readers. Meanwhile, 99% of the population will remain blissfully unaware they should beware of sipping on a Mai-Tai from a "particularly racist mug."
It is an unquestionably difficult time for the hospitality industry. Every day, another restaurant shutters, one more bar pulls its steel gate down for good. Since its invention, one kind of watering hole has seen America through its most grueling times: the tiki bar.
So the Times decided to make things just a little harder for the industry -- by accusing one sector of it of long-standing racism and cultural appropriation. Taste the prejudice behind the paper umbrellas:

So if we eat at a Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Indian, or Vietnamese restaurant it’s ‘cultural appropriation’?..................
The NYT article reads like the type of crap NPR would report in “All Things Considered”.
But if you eat French, German, Hungarian, or bangers...that’s White Privilege.
My understanding is the Tiki bar arose from vets returning from WWII pacific and trying to recreate some of the (few) good memories they had of Pacific island life when they had some R&R. Trying to bring back the positive things some young guy from Kansas had in the exotic pacific.
“Here’s something delicious in a silly mug.”
Indeed.

A bit late to be critical of tiki culture.
Don Ho is displeased with the NYT’s
Cultural appropriation another particularly insidious racialist Marxist claim. Only if you are of a heritage deemed to have been historically especially harmed are you eligible for such “protection”, which makes it another one-sided basis for domination: if you descend from the broad Western civ umbrella, your “culture” is freely everyone’s but you are forbidden from ANY borrowing outside that. Of course those who are not are free to do and “borrow” whatever the heck they please.

U.K tv documentary looking at the explosion of “Tiki Culture” & Exotica in 1950s American pop culture. It contains a short segment on Martin Denny & Exotica music. It also looks at how this style influenced arts, design, leisure, architecture etc, as well as a look inside a huge Tiki theme park built near Los Angeles in the 1980s. This was aired circa 1999 as part of Channel 4’s “Without Walls” series.

Attention all People of Color! Get off of that toilet! You did not create that!
Just the mention of that show is like nails scratching across a blackboard.
If I should I be out and about, and accidentally hear that theme music, I get the dry heaves. Who ever thought that Joseph Goebbels could be outdone? Voilà, ATC has done the impossible!

NPR really doesn’t consider all things. They don’t even try to balance viewpoints or get counter arguments and perspectives.
“And I wear cotton clothes.”
As a smoker, I guess I’m a racist - slaves also picked tobacco.
OMG I’ve been to Maui a bunch of times over the years - had no idea that made me a racist imperialist /s
“How you say cucumber “. But Hilaria Baldwin pretending she’s Latina and not a white girl who grew up in Boston is fine because she meant no harm.
My folks had several Martin Denny album’s back in the day. Now i realize they were racis’ and stolen culture. Or something. 😂🙌🏄
My favorite Tiki Bar is at Coligny Beach on Hilton Head. Every Sunday they have a band, drinks are reasonable and girls play volley ball in bikinis. Great way to spend an afternoon.
Reminds you of those Nazi-era newsreels they show in documentaries, doesn’t it?
When everything is racist...nothing is racist.
This article shows a complete lack of knowledge of human history going back to the point when the first human picked up a rock to use as a weapon.
Individual human achievements that are good get copied, passed on and improved upon. Cross cultural exchanges have been around as long as men have traveled and traded ideas moved around this planet.
Those that see “racism” in everything are either evil or mentally ill. Either way they should not be listened to.
