~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Eglin Air Force Base, Florida

FLeglinafb1

Eglin Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base in western Florida, located about three miles southwest of Valparaiso in Okaloosa County.

The host unit at Eglin is the 96th Test Wing (formerly the 96th Air Base Wing). The 96 TW is the test and evaluation center for Air Force air-delivered weapons, navigation and guidance systems, Command and Control systems, and Air Force Special Operations Command systems.

Eglin AFB was established 85 years ago in 1935 as the Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base. It is named in honor of Lt. Col. Frederick I. Eglin (1891–1937), who was killed in a crash of his Northrop A-17 attack aircraft on a flight from Langley to Maxwell Field, Alabama.

The 96th Test Wing, Eglin AFB, Fla., is the test and evaluation center for Air Force air-delivered weapons, navigation and guidance systems, Command and Control systems, and Air Force Special Operations Command systems. The wing provides expert evaluation and validation of the performance of systems throughout the design, development, acquisition, and sustainment process to ensure the warfighter has technologically superior, reliable, maintainable, sustainable and safe systems.

FLeglinafb5

The 96th TW performs developmental test and evaluation across the complete system life cycle for a wide variety of customers including: Air Force Systems Program Offices, the Air Force Research Laboratory, logistics and product centers; major commands; other DoD services and U.S. government agencies (Department of Transportation, NASA, etc.); foreign military sales; and private industry.

There are seven distinct groups, including the Air Force Seek Eagle Office, and more than 30 squadrons and divisions; management of approximately 120,000 square miles of over water airspace, the Air Force's largest fire program, emergency services, explosive ordnance disposal squadron, and supply function.

The wing is home to the Air Force's third largest hospital, which services more than 92,000 beneficiaries and operates the Air Force's only invisible wounds clinic. It is also home to the Air Force's largest transportation function in the continental U.S.; one of three Air Force combat-coded control and reporting centers and one of two Department of Defense units to achieve level five software engineering status. The Air Force Armament Museum also falls under the 96th Test Wing.

Unseen Realities

Bible in a Year:

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but . . . against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

 Ephesians 6:12

In 1876, men drilling for coal in central Indiana thought they had found the gates of hell. Historian John Barlow Martin reports that at six hundred feet, “foul fumes issued forth amid awesome noises.” Afraid they had “bitten into the roof of the devil’s cave,” the miners plugged the well and scurried back to their homes.

The miners, of course, were mistaken—and some years later, they would drill again and be rich in natural gas. Even though they were mistaken, I find myself a little jealous of them. These miners lived with an awareness of the spiritual world that is often missing from my own life. It’s easy for me to live as if the supernatural and the natural rarely intersect and to forget that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but . . . against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).

When we see evil winning in our world, we shouldn’t give in or try to fight it in our own strength. Instead, we’re to resist evil by putting on “the full armor of God” (vv. 13–18). Studying Scripture, meeting regularly with other believers for encouragement, and making choices with the good of others in mind can help us “stand against the devil’s schemes” (v. 11). Equipped by the Holy Spirit, we can stand firm in the face of anything (v. 13).

Reflect & Pray Reflect & Pray

How can you cultivate an awareness of the reality of the spiritual world? Is God calling you to “put on” some part of the “armor” Paul describes? What might that look like today?

Help me to remember, God, to walk and serve by faith and in Your power.

I might prefer New Hampshire or Maine as long as there are local Plowers and Internet access.

Howdy, lauren. I hope you had a nice, relaxing Christmas.

Spending the winter in FL sounds pretty good these days. LOL

We spent time around Ft. Walton occasionally when visiting my dad. Never went on the bases but we did get to check out the fabulous museum.
