When the church doors open, only white people will be allowed inside.
That’s the message the Asatru Folk Assembly in Murdock, Minnesota, is sending after being granted a conditional use permit to open a church there and practice its pre-Christian religion that originated in northern Europe.
Despite a council vote officially approving the permit this month, residents are pushing back against the decision.
“I think they thought they could fly under the radar in a small town like this, but we’d like to keep the pressure on them,” said Peter Kennedy, a longtime Murdock resident. “Racism is not welcome here."
The Southern Poverty Law Center describes Asatru Folk Assembly as a “neo-Volkisch hate group” that couches “their bigotry in baseless claims of bloodlines grounding the superiority of one’s white identity.”
“We’re not. It’s just simply not true," said Allen Turnage, a folk assembly board member. "Just because we respect our own culture, that doesn’t mean we are denigrating someone else’s."
The group, based in Brownsville, California, says teachings and membership are for those of strictly European bloodlines.
Their forefathers, according to the website, were "Angels and Saxons, Lombards and Heruli, Goths and Vikings, and, as sons and daughters of these people, they are united by ties of blood and culture undimmed by centuries."
“We respect the ways our ancestors viewed the world and approached the universe a thousand years ago,” Turnage said.
A small contingent of church supporters in Murdock said the community should be open-minded and respectful to all.

“...to open a church there and practice its pre-Christian religion that originated in northern Europe.”
I always thought the term “church” equated to “Christian”.
I’m guessing that in rural Minnesota they just could have left the “no blacks” stipulation and avoided any controversy and no blacks would have ever attended.
“whites only is repugnant”
Many churches and other organizations are blacks-only. That’s equally repugnant, but there you have it.
Asatru is the Nordic religion.
I have no problem with Vikings having their ancient religion.
A few years ago I scheduled a Saturday blood donation at a church close to where I live. Didn’t know it at the time but its a predominantly (pretty much ALL) black church.
You shoulda seen the “what are YOU doin’ here” looks when I stepped on that bus.....I could literally feel the vib, it was undeniable.
As fate would have it the lead pastor was just finishing up his donation and graciously welcomed me in true Christian fashion......he was the only one. Lol
practice its pre-Christian religion
And yet, they deliberately use the world "church" throughout the article in an attempt to smear Christianity.
It would be more accurate to call this a pagan temple.
Pretty much this. The council could not disapprove the zoning change on the basis of religion or viewpoint. And all of the objections were based on that.
Being an a-hole is protected speech.
When we moved to TN, Hubby was looking for a barber shop, and found one online that was close. When he walked through the door ... oops!! It obviously was blacks only. They did cut his hair, but they made sure he knew he was the turd in the punch bowl, and “don’t come back”. He didn’t.
I remember “Black Only Colleges” since I was a kid-—and I am now over 80.
Their slogan when begging for donations was “A mind is a terrible thing to waste’, IIRC.
NO ONE who is white can go to those schools.
Somehow-—THAT was considered OK.
I can only imagine what was said after he left.
“Church”, my Aunt Fanny! It’s a cult, straight up. This is a smear job on Christianity.
“Angels and Saxons, Lombards and Heruli, Goths and Vikings”
I think I qualify for all categories.
This part of the state has a lot Finnish Apostolic churches and it seems every town is a particular nationality, Norwegen, Swedish, Polish, etc.
Yep. One more story and I’ll shut up.
After high school (circa 1978) I considered a career in city fire rescue. Of course no internet in those days so I kept an eye on the job postings in the news paper. Wasn’t too long until I saw the job announced. Back in those days a visit to city hall was necisarry to view the whole job and apply. Sure enough there it was on the job board big as life but with one problem. Right at the top of the announcement in bold capital letters were the words “BLACK APPLICANTS ONLY NEED APPLY”.
A real eye opener for a 20 y/o in regards to race.
If it's just a question of warranting architectural soundness, the doctrines of the church are irrelevant.
No way this could fly under the radar in liberal-maddened Minnesota.
Zoning would be my guess.
If it's just a question of warranting architectural soundness, the doctrines of the church are irrelevant.
Agreed.
Obviously, that doesn't apply to some militant/separatist churches.
Who cares
Thank u
Yet so many here do this
“In a country with separation of church and state, why does a church (even a creepy pagan one) need a “permit”?”
What I’ve learned here is that that is not true. The COTUS only says “ Congress shall make no law....”
> ...It’s a cult, straight up.
It’s a “cult” that predates Christianity by thousands of years.
Not specifically “Asatru Folk Assembly”, but the Asatru spiritual beliefs.
