Avery Island? Isn’t that where Tabasco sauce is made?

One and the same.

The salt mines in the area are very pure.

“Avery Island? Isn’t that where Tabasco sauce is made?”

That is correct. The central portion of Avery Island is actually a salt dome. Thus it is about 70 feet above sea level. The salt does not reach the surface but it is close.

That is terrible news. They will be in my prayers as well. For those that don’t know, MSHA makes OSHA look like frat boys when it comes to safety enforcement so this is troubling, to say the least.

Salt mines my dad’s bro (RIP) worked in under Detroit. I recall going down there as a 5-7 y/o with uncle and seeing big trucks in what was like an underground city. More memory jogs from FR. Sheesh. T

He died many, many years later in Monrovia CA. Emphysema. Dad saw him go out and cold turkeyed his 2-pack a day Pall Mall habit. Dad made it to 80 in Kingman AZ with sis. Took care of mom who battled Parkinson for 20 years. Tough assignment. Sometimes I wonder about Parkinson and if it’s related to...dunno.

She had brain implant to control tremors. Worked pretty good. Didn’t do much for seize ups...stiffness at night. RIP parents.

Aren’t they afraid that if they mine out too much salt, the island will tip over?

A world without Tabasco sauce? Horrifying!

In 1980 at Lake Peignure in LA Texaco drilled in the middle of the lake into a salt mine.

The lake drained like a bathtub.

Yep, Tabasco brand is from Avery Island. Louisiana and I believe also Dixie brands are from Avery as well.

Damn fine hot sauces. Louisiana is my favorite with Dixie a close runner up. For most things and my taste buds, Tabasco is too hot and masks the flavor that I like. I just taste hot and not much pepper if that makes sense. The one exception that comes to mind is I like a squeeze of lemon and Tabasco with half shell oysters.

Just followed up on those links..... very interesting and I can’t believe I missed that event (I worked in a salt mine many years ago).... and it occurred just a few miles to the northwest of Avery Island.
