Boris Johnson and EU set Sunday deadline to decide on Brexit deal

A Brexit deal must be sealed by Sunday or there will be no deal, Boris Johnson and Ursula von der Leyen agreed after a “lively and frank” three-hour summit that set the stage for a dramatic final act of the negotiations.

Despite nine months of troubled talks, “very large gaps” were said to remain between the UK and EU. The leaders said they should come to a deal or no deal outcome by the end of the weekend, with pressure on both sides to find time for parliamentary ratification.

Downing Street said the meeting in Brussels had been “frank” – a diplomatic expression for a heated conversation. The commission president, Von der Leyen, tweeted: “We had a lively and interesting discussion on the state of play on outstanding issues.

“We understand each other’s positions. They remain far apart. The teams should immediately reconvene to try to resolve these issues. We will come to a decision by the end of the weekend.”

Haven’t they figured out Brexit yet? They are almost as bad as the US.

They are dragging this out purposely so as to thwart the will of the people.

Should just opt out with no deal. EU will be the biggest loser. Let God sort out the details.

A high school friend of mine immigrated to Britain (some people say there’s a woman to blame...). I’m going to ask him of his opinion from a Brit’s point of view. He’s normally left wing I think.

He’s also a poet. If anyone wants his pen-name I’ll sent it to you.

How long is this going to drag on ? What’s is so complicated
about this ? Think of the EU as a country club. If you don’t like the club, you just drop out, without any problems. Again, what is so G/D complicated about this ?

The UK has already 'dropped out', and has left the European Union. The present impasse is about agreeing a trade deal between the EU and the now-independent UK.

They have already completed Brexit.

The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020.

“to thwart the will of the people”

Err.. what? The UK which voted 52:48 to leave has ALREADY left the EU as of 31.Jan.2020.

The UK is out of the EU - for the past 10 months

This is about a trade deal between the union of British nations and the european union

no deal hurts both. The bigger loser is the UK with 42% of its trade with different EU countries and even worse a large chunk of trade being dependent on free flow of goods across borders

What doesn’t happen?

Brexit?
it’s already happened - as of 31.Jan.2020

A post-Brexit trade deal?
It’s possible that a post-Brexit trade deal won’t happen by 1 Jan 2021

Because the analogy isn't correct

Firstly - the UK has already left "the club" -- they did so on the 31st of January 2020

Secondly, trying to work with your country club analogy, it is more like a co-operative where every club member has an equal share, equal vote and veto over every decision the club makes. Furthermore, the club has certain sports rules -- say they say they have special tennis racket standards and height of the net etc. in addition they also have a specific set of rules for non-club guest members

Now the UK has left and still wants to play REGULARLY but it doesn't want to be guest member but a member who can bring its own rules and have all of the rights of a member, but not pay in.

The UK has left the EU - the question now is what kind of trade deal will it have? The only option is the Canada deal - without a free flow of goods. That cripples the UK manufacturing industry which relies on it, and it also hobbles the UK financial industry which uses the continent as its hinterland

But there is no “thwarting the will of” the 52% who voted leave. Just as Biden getting a slightly higher popular vote score doesn’t mean Biden has “the will of the people” similarly this was a majority vote in a non-binding referendum.

The key was that parliament voted to leave in 2016 listening to the referendum.

And the second part is that they DID leave as I said above.

52% voted “some kind of leave” - and parliament fulfilled that. Now the question is WHAT kind of leave? meaning how close should the relationship be — if they want a relationship with free flow of goods (no border stops etc.) then it has to be with standards agreed - like the free flow of goods across US state lines
