Venezuela’s congressional election on Sunday will almost certainly give President Nicolás Maduro control over the country’s last major independent institution, but will do little to improve his image at home and abroad.
Maduro, who already has the loyalty of the courts, the military, prosecutors and other institutions, seeks to load the National Assembly with members of his United Socialist Party of Venezuela. Critics say he’s guaranteed that by rigging the system to smother the last remnants of democracy in Venezuela.
An opposition coalition led by U.S.-backed politician Juan Guaidó is boycotting the vote. The European Union, the U.S. and several other nations have already declared the vote a sham.
“The truth cannot be hidden,” Guaidó said in a videotaped message, noting the apparent low voter turnout. “The majority of Venezuela turned its back on the fraud that began months ago.”
Voting results were not available late Sunday several hours after the polls had closed.
Despite Venezuela’s political turmoil, voting took place with no apparent problems in Caracas, where polling places were operated by civilian militia members and armed soldiers alongside election workers.
A light flow of voters walked up to ballot boxes at Andres Bello School in downtown Caracas. They checked their names on a wall outside, and inside showed identification cards before registering their votes on touchscreen machines, which printed a paper ballot they dropped into a box.
“I came to vote, and in less than half a second I have voted, quickly,” Caracas resident Rafael Espinoza said. “I’ll tell anyone who wants to do so that they can come down and vote in fractions of a second.”
The Supreme Court this year appointed a new elections commission, including three members who have been sanctioned by the U.S. and Canada, without participation of the opposition-led Congress...

No evidence of fraud. Right?
And now we are having Venezuela elections......
Venezuela. The Philadelphia of South America.
And not necessarily for whom you think you are voting! Dominion machines...
Maduro borrowed some democrats to set up their election.
smartmatic stealing two countries this year
With Dominion machines... you are not required to vote. The machine imputes your choice automatically along with Mickey Mouse, Donald duck and every dead person buried in Venezuela.
It will be another landslide for Maduro and his henchmen by another miraculous 400% turnout!
“In a startling development, several hours after the polls closed vote counting was suddenly suspended. When counting was restarted it was discovered that Joe Biden held a solid lead.”
I can see why Madura and buddies would win.
They have a really good slogan,
“A Cat In Every Pot!”
“...Maduro borrowed some democrats to set up their election....”
Somehow, I get the feeling that it was the other way around.
Whatever happened to the supposed American merc “coup plotters” who were “caught” in a boat by the Venezuelans a while back? Strange how the press lost interest in that story.
Good thing they have those Dominion voting machines. You know, to ensure the election is fair and honest...
Maduro’s Party won handily. He had stated if they did not win Parliament he would step down as President.
I really wish the US would lift their sanctions on Venezuela, and our failed regime change coup that have adversely impacted the health and lives of people there.
Our own US is in the midst of our own coup right now by bad actors in our government. I hope we don’t acquiesce any more than the people in Venezuela have. I actually think the US coup is having more success than the one we tried in Venezuela.
I will never forget the images of Protestors in Venezuela in their immaculately clean, and neatly pressed clothing, well coifed hair protesting the lack of clean water. I was wondering how they could be so clean in their nice white clothes with no water.
