Texas waitress gets $2K tip but restaurant refuses to give her a cent
New York Post ^ | December 2, 2020 | Jackie Salo

A Texas waitress says she was thrilled to receive a $2,000 tip on a bill — only to find out from the restaurant that she won’t take home a single cent.

Bauer said she didn’t notice until he left that he had given her a $2,000 tip and wrote a note that said, “Merry Christmas! Keep working hard!”

“I was like wait. I just opened it and started crying. I was like ‘Oh my god! My kids! I’m going to spend it all on my kids’,” said Bauer, who has two sons aged 2 years and 5 months old.

“I was like ‘oh my god. I’ve never had a Christmas where I’ve been able to like splurge on them’.”

But she said her excitement was quickly dashed when the restaurant told her that they can’t process a tip larger than $500.

Other servers suggested that the restaurant give her four separate tips of $500 but the seafood joint refused, KVUE reported.

It is unclear why the restaurant couldn’t process $500 of the $2,000 tip to give to Bauer, in line with its limits.

I would not be surprised is this scam joint receives an uptick in negative reviews.

I wonder if it is a PCI rule.

Does this mean the restaurant isn’t cashing the check? Or they just aren’t sharing it?

It is going to cost them a lot more than $2,000.

Imagine you spent $200 at a restaurant and when you got your credit card bill it showed you gave a $2,000 tip. I think the credit card industry will prevent that sort of thing without customer verification.

This is why I tip in cash, into the waitress’s hand.

What restaurant chain? They need to feel some pain.

Nope. Nothing in PCI addresses anything like this. PCI is entirely focused on protecting the cardholder data (name, card number, CVV2 number, magstrip data, etc.) They don’t care what you buy or tips or anything like that. As long as the cardholder data is protected, you can buy or sell whatever you want however you want. Colombian cartels could take credit cards for cocaine shipments and be fully PCI compliant.

Yeah, that’s kind of what I’m thinking. It sounds like the restaurant or credit card company has some sort of limit control.

I hope the tip giver sees the story and shows up with a cashier’s check for the waitress.

If this story is true, that’s a really dirty, low down thing to do to any worker. She should be looking for another employer. This manager is not honorable.

Imagine you spent $200 at a restaurant and when you got your credit card bill it showed you gave a $2,000 tip.

An anecdotal experience from a few years back.....I went into a local Loop restaurant, ordered a pizza to go, total around 21.00

They were having trouble with their credit card machine, so they were using the old swipe across a carbon receipt method.
When my charge card bill came in, the charge was for 2,100.00 and not 21.00
Apparently the young girl, when writing down the amount, didn't put the cents in the correct place

It hit the card, no calls, nothing....although you'd think that $2100.00 at a pizza joint would be something that would trigger a warning

A call to the restaurant manager cleared things up eventually....but sometimes they slip past

A ten million dollar lawsuit against the restaurant owner should straighten things out. Larceny, grand larceny!

I was just using PCI generically, as in “Payment Card Industry”.

It’s quite possible that the particular customer’s card company has a rule regarding how much tip as a percentage of total bill can be included without verifying with the customer. It sure sounds reasonable.

i.e. my money is on a card provider rule, that will be overruled when the customer confirms that that is the right amount and nobody added a bunch of zeros to the receipt.
