Believe it or not, finding Foster’s beer in Australia – what international drinkers think of as the country’s beer of choice – isn’t easy. In its proverbial homeland, the Southern Cross-spangled cans elude shop shelves and, in 2015, just 10 venues across the entire country poured it on tap. But the brand that promoted Australia’s laidback drinking culture to the world has decided to relaunch locally, upping production in Melbourne by 300% in the coming months.
The brewer Carlton and United Breweries, now owned by Japanese behemoth Asahi, will target hip-pocket nerves, going after low-cost competitors. Thirty cans of Foster’s will retail at $53, compared to Lion’s XXXX Gold at $42.95 and CUB’s own Victoria Bitter at $59.99.

Beer is expensive downunder.
I used to drink it on tap at my local pub back in the 1990s and early 2000s (believe Carling O’Keefe distributed it in the Great White North).
When I was there in ‘94, the favored beer in Perth was called Buck’s.
I don’t think I have hade one since the 70’s.
But those are Australian Dollars..............
I never took a liking to Fosters, but then again I haven’t tried it in a long long time, and even then it was only from a can. Fosters on tap might be better.
My local store started selling the individual 26 oz cans of fosters lager and ale. Its produced in the USA. Good stuff!
I like their ale - I was surprised and IMHO, its the closest thing I can find to a British pub ale without spending $15+ on a six-pack of imported Boddingtons. Bass Ale now OEM manufactures in the USA and I feel its really lost something in the process.
As big as Australia is, I would have expected more private beer brewers to be cooking up their own recipes.
Maybe they are active, just not very public about it.
Tony Kaye of Yes turned me onto Boddington’s. Great stuff
Lamentable name “think I’ll have a Resh!!”
"When you're having more than one"
I tried and enjoyed Cooper’s Ale. It is brewed in Australia. It seems to be hard to find in the U.S.
A Resh? Is it contagious?
Aussies by their beers by the 30-pack, eh?!
As a side note, in Spain unless you are in a beer hall (Cerveceria) you just order 'beer'. There is no choice, just beer. In the south you'll probably get a brand called Cruz Campo, In the north maybe Estrella Dam or something like that. It's regional.
It’s flavored water. But if you drink enough of it you’re lip will go numb.
