They just don’t want the US NOT dependent on the rest of the world for gold and copper, or any other metals.
I’ll back the Army Corps of Engineers on this decision. I’ve read several articles, various sources, and there seems to be no solution to preventing run off pollution getting into the salmon areas.
Don Trump Jr. is entitled to his opinion, but he holds no office. What did he have to do with this project?
Was he against it because it may destroy areas populated with Salmon?
When the Democrats get into power again the project will go forward. They polluted the Colorado river and no one went to jail. What’s a few salmon compared to trunks for of dollars for them?

This was a political decision... as usual.
This ill-thought out mining project has the potential to destroy the world’s largest sockeye salmon run thereby decimating a major portion of US balance of trade with Japan.
While you can eat salmon, gold ore is hard to swallow and not nourishing. Then there are tens of thousands of people that will lose their jobs, life savings, families, homes, so one more corporate project will make a few people very wealthy.
Trump did the right thing. HarrrisBiden will, of course, reverse it provided their pay off is large enough.
I actually knew a guy who owned an Alaskan gold mine. I wonder if he’s involved with this?
He came through Arizona once and let me hold his “traveling” gold. It filled — mounding above — both my hands cupped together.
He kept it in a Baggie in a briefcase, next to his .44 Magnum.
First off, it’s not a gold mine! It’s primarily copper and molybdenum.
Secondly, as an Alaskan, this is disappointing and ignorant. Great way to continue blocking well-paying jobs from a small Alaska Native village. Gotta keep current and future generations of those people on the public dole. “It’s for the salmon, brah!”
And lastly, the hypocrite liberal, enviro wackos advocating against this are certainly doing so from a) outside Alaska (Don Trump Jr is a case in point, wanting to keep his ritzy fishing outpost in Western Alaska free from even the tiniest development footprint) and b) their smart phones, which are full of the rare earth minerals precisely found at Pebble Mine. If America doesn’t develop these minerals, China and other decrepit nations will, under FAR less stringent environmental regulations than Alaska has. But hey, whatever! NIMBYism at its finest.
After years of battling for the development of Pebble Mine, pro-industry Alaskans knew it was an uphill fight against the shrieks of greenies. It certainly wasn’t happening under Obama; Trump was promising until it became clear that his son had prioritized his own upscale outdoor pursuits over the well-being of Alaskans and Alaska’s economy. This is just the latest instance of Outsiders (typically liberals) coming here and screwing everything up because “they know what’s best.”
He’s against it because he likes to fish in that area. Along with bunches of other very wealthy people from Boston, New York, and DC. The only thing they like more than fishing in Bristol Bay is telling Alaskans how to manage our state so it looks all perfect when they make their annual visit.
Since when did the “chance” of something happening keep us from doing it? The engineering protections that would be in place at Pebble would drastically minimize the chance of devastation to a small area of these headwaters. We’re talking about a relatively small development footprint in an enormous area. If we’re scared of a “chance,” we should never get in a car, plane, elevator... Should we “trust the science” or not this time??

This is the largest known undeveloped copper ore body in the world. It is worth $500 billion!
There is “no solution” in the case of a 10.0 mag earthquake or freak meteor hitting the mine directly, which is what much of the criticism of Pebble is predicated on. (“Well it could happen!!”) There is always an engineering solution to events that are likely to occur. Whether the engineering solution is economic is the actual question.
This ore body has been under development since its 1987 discovery. Heck, I was always reading about it in the geologic exploration newspaper. It was a world class discovery from the gitgo.
If China buys the Pebble company, maybe Hunter can get the project through.

Don’t fall for the environmental wacko take on this!
As one who has worked and lived on Bristol Bay. Here is what is true story:
Bristol bay is a beautiful place blessed by the abundance of salmon and wild game........for three months of the year. For the remainder of the time it wallows in crime, abuse, alcoholism, and suicide (highest in the US) Bristol Bay needs the mine for continued year round employment and prosperity!
Couple more facts for you; Alaska’s most popular and expensive salmon spawn in the tailing pile of Alaska’s largest copper mine to date! (Copper River Reds) this mine closed in the 1930’s.
And then there is the Katami Volcano, it erupted in 1912 dumping 9&1/2 cubic miles of hot acidic ash into the valleys and lakes of the area. The lakes still bear the colors of the ash as well as produce the largest salmon run in the world.
Bottom line is that there is little harm we can do.
Alaska certainly doesn't have a shortage of lower 48 staters moving north for those high paying jobs does it?
Gotta keep current and future generations of those people on the public dole.

I'm sure you turn down your annual $1,600 oil dividend don't you? And you're probably pissed off at the fact that you, as an Alaskan, don't pay any state or local income taxes or state sales tax other than maybe a local sales tax depending on where you live.......
A close friend's brother works for an Alaskan oil company. Two weeks on, two weeks off. On his weeks off, they either fly him home to Florida or he stays local and fishes........Just taking up a job an Alaskan doesn't want.........LOL!
