Geneva (AFP) - Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the main driver of climate change, hit record highs last year and have continued climbing this year, despite measures to halt the pandemic, the UN said Monday.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said lockdowns, border closures, flight groundings and other measures to rein in the coronavirus crisis had indeed cut emissions of many pollutants and greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide.
But it warned the industrial slowdown due to the pandemic had not curbed record concentrations of the greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in the atmosphere, raising temperatures, causing sea levels to rise and driving more extreme weather.
"The lockdown-related fall in emissions is just a tiny blip on the long-term graph," WMO chief Petteri Taalas said in a statement.
"We need a sustained flattening of the curve."
"Carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for centuries and in the ocean for even longer," Taalas said.
"The last time the Earth experienced a comparable concentration of CO2 was three to five million years ago," he said, pointing out that at that time global temperatures were two to three degrees Celsius warmer and sea levels were 10-20 metres higher than now.
"But there weren't 7.7 billion inhabitants," he said.
The second most prevalent greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is methane -- emitted in part from cattle and fermentation from rice paddies -- which is responsible for around 16 percent of warming.

The great reset has begun
Yeah, it's a bitch, isn't it? People are still breathing...
The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
— H. L. Mencken
And plant growth stimulant gases are still stimulating plant growth.
We should take all the Asians and Africans and “repurpose” their lives.
Hail Hydra!
The last time CO2 concentrations were this high were 3 to 5 million years ago. What caused the high concentrations and global warming back then? It wasn’t man made and the earth survived.
OMG! Who should we send money to help us? /s
No doubt this is a call to lock down the world even more, based on junk science.
What we don’t produce, outside sources will. Mother nature balances things out AS IT SEES FIT.
Volcanoes...on earth and in the oceans is methane max.. This is mother nature at work....not man.
Carbon dioxide comprises .02% of the total volume of the earth’s atmosphere. BFD.
Here we go again! More nonsense!
So, maybe it’s not humans and industrialization after all!
“We need a sustained flattening of the curve.”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Gee, where have we heard that before & how’s it working for the country?? Lockdowns, masks, trying to take away all that is near & dear like family gatherings, church, etc. Two weeks they said, to “flatten the curve”.
There is a solution to the “greenhouse gas levels” - it DOES work & can be used in any country. There are two major drawbacks for the powers-that-be: it does NOT require giving up fossil fuels & there is no quick & easy money in it for lining their own pockets. In fact, it gets people off of government subsidies. What is this solution? The movie “Kiss the Ground” (Netflix) explains & shows the science.
Of course these “facts” won’t cause those clowns to wonder “gee,I wonder if this could mean that something *other* than human activity might be the cause of this pollution?”
Why would “covid19 measures” reduce the amount of CO2 in the air?
Doesn’t this prove that the rise in CO2 is NOT man made?
Yup,I was thinking the same thing.Until a few years ago the global warming Maoists used the shrinking of the Antarctic ice shelf as proof of “global warming”. But then NASA announced the discovery of at least one (or more...can’t recall the exact number) active volcano *under* that very same ice shelf. One can easily imagine what effect an an active volcano might have on a nearby collection of ice.
I had an old book from about 1850. It was a monthly magazine which was bound together. There was an article about the volcanoes in the ocean....and as I recall, methane was the big thing in the article. I wish I still had the article. The info was NOT hypothetical.
