While everyone is talking about the presidential election, one aspect of the 2020 race is being overlooked even though it’s huge.
Not only did Republicans make considerable gains in the House, that no one expected, they won most of the races that will entail redistricting. This is like a double loss for Democrats
Every 10 years, after the census, congressional and state legislature districts are redrawn to account for population changes. This gives whoever is drawing the maps the power to maximize the number of districts that favor their party — a tactic known as gerrymandering. And as we wrote last month, the 2020 election represented the last chance for voters to weigh in on who would draw those maps.
Both parties went into the election with a chance to draw more congressional districts than the other, but the end result was just about the best-case scenario for Republicans. As the map below shows, Republicans are set to control the redistricting of 188 congressional seats — or 43 percent of the entire House of Representatives. By contrast, Democrats will control the redistricting of, at most, 73 seats, or 17 percent.
How did Republicans pull that off? By winning almost every 2020 election in which control of redistricting was at stake…

I get these otherwise would be very important victories.
But in light of the Great Train Robbery, they won’t matter. Redistricting won’t matter, runoffs won’t matter, because if they get away with stealing this, there will be no other free elections.
Well she’s still the speaker for two years.
And I get no thrill anymore about Rs holding the senate or getting the house.
Almost NONE have gone to bat for Trump.
They make believe they care about conservative issues as long as the know they can’t get them passed.
When there is a conservative president, they worthless.
If Trump is denied the presidency, I will vote for a Conservative and if there are none I will write one in.
If Trump loses, then let the inevitable come faster and take it from there.
I’m sure Commiecrats will fight it, riot, steal, whatever they have to do, to stop republicans from redistricting. Suddenly, courts will rule it unconstitutional.
The Dems tweaked this election in 6 states for the presidential race. Then next one they will run the entire card in all 50.
Isn’t simply unbelievable that the GOP did so well and Trump, who had all the enthusiasm lost?
HHHHMMMMMMMMMM....
I put little faith in redistricting.
Pennsylvania is the model. The Republican legislature specified new districting. Then the PA Supreme Court overruled and made their own district boundaries, giving more power to Rats.
This is 100% against the PA and US Constitutions, but that didn’t mean diddley squat.
Yeah. If the GOP thinks we are going back to being good little Sheeple, satisfied with their bullshit, they have a surprise coming.
If God doesn't deal with her first.
And I am praying for that, along with her other crony peers, who are all well past their best by date.
No laws mean anything if nobody enforces them.
They are just worthless words written on paper which is in effect, political virtue signaling.
A BIG one.
Why the hell would I vote for them?
If Trump wins and it will help him in two years, I’ll vote for them so at least Trump doesn’t get driven too crazy by congress.
If the election is stolen...goodbye
Sounds suprising IF China Joe really wan the presidential election !
Looks like there is something wrong or FAKE in the process .....
This is one of the reasons that makes the election even less likely that Biden would win in 73% of the districts (which are roughly the same population) yet somehow Trump lost.
Too much bad juju on this thread. Adapt, improvise, and overcome ...
Maybe I missed the explanation, but I thought redistricting was delegated to state legislatures, not Congress itself.
To influence redistricting, a party needs to win state legislative seats. Republicans did some of that but this article seems to focus on Congressional wins by Rs.
I hope the author knows more about the process than indicated in the article.
Correct.
As in this excerpt from the original article. :
“The GOP kept control of the redistricting process in Texas by holding the state House. Given that Election Data Services estimates Texas will have 39 congressional seats for the next decade, this was arguably Republicans’ single biggest win of the 2020 election.
Republicans successfully defended the Pennsylvania legislature from a Democratic takeover, although they'll still need to share redistricting power over its projected 17 congressional districts, as Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf has veto power.
Republicans held the majority in both chambers of the North Carolina legislature, which will enable them to draw an expected 14 congressional districts all by themselves.
Amendment 1 passed in Virginia, taking the power to draw the state's 11 congressional districts out of the hands of the all-Democratic state government and investing it in a bipartisan commission made up of a mix of citizens and legislators.
In Missouri (home to eight congressional districts), Gov. Mike Parson was elected to a second term, keeping redistricting control in Republican hands.
In an upset, Republicans managed to keep their majority in the Minnesota state Senate, thus ensuring Democrats wouldn't have the unfettered ability to draw the state's projected seven congressional districts. The parties will share redistricting responsibilities there.
The GOP kept control of the state House in Iowa, with its four congressional districts.
Republicans maintained their supermajorities in the Kansas Legislature, enabling them to pass a new congressional map (worth four districts) over Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's veto.
Finally, Republicans surprisingly flipped both the state Senate and state House in New Hampshire (worth two congressional districts), seizing full control of both the state government and the redistricting process.”
And those massive amounts of voters, who strongly rejected the increasingly radical democrat party, are going to quietly let the democrats steal the White House?
Obama and Holder take on partisan gerrymandering with redistricting
Aug 27, 2019 — In one of his first public political actions since he left the White House, Obama unveiled Redistricting U on Twitter as an in-person training arm ...All On The Line, launched earlier this year, is a combination of Obama’s “Organizing For Action” and former Attorney General Eric Holder’s “National Redistricting Action Fund.”

Former President Barack Obama on Monday announced a new initiative that will help volunteers influence redistricting efforts in states across the country.
Redistricting U, an extension of the All On The Line campaign, will send trainers to provide free training and tools to volunteers about their state redistricting process, gather feedback on ways to improve their communities and teach them how to be leaders in the fair map movement, according to the initiative’s website.
All On The Line, launched earlier this year, is a combination of Obama’s Organizing For Action and former Attorney General Eric Holder’s National Redistricting Action Fund.
Obama said in a statement he has always believed “training is at the heart of organizing.”
“It’s why I made it a priority in my 2008 campaign and throughout our larger movement for change in the years since,” Obama said in a statement on the group’s website.
He added, “The movement for fair maps will determine the course of progress on every issue we care about for the next decade. And we can’t wait to begin organizing when the redistricting process starts in 2021. We need to build this movement from the ground up — right now.”
The new initiative is the latest effort by Obama to push for voting reform and fight against gerrymandering. The Obamas have long pushed for increased voter participation and fought against partisan gerrymandering. Ahead of the 2018 midterm election, former first lady Michelle Obama launched her When We All Vote initiative and traveled to various cities pushing for increased voter turnout.
