Nancy Pelosi has been reelected speaker of the House by her caucus for the next session of Congress, marking what will be her fourth term with the gavel. The caucus vote was conducted virtually, but Pelosi was approved with a voice vote.
Pelosi, 80, did not not face any challenge for her post, but she will also need to secure a simple majority — 218 Democratic votes — by the full House of Representatives in January to be sworn in again as speaker.
In 2019, several Democrats voted for someone other than her on the floor, but with a slimmer margin in the majority after the 2020 election, she cannot afford to lose more than a handful of votes.
House Democrats are holding leadership elections as they grapple with unexpected losses and the prospects for a Congress that remains divided. The GOP appears likely to maintain control of the Senate. Plus House Republicans picked up at least eight seats and several races are too close to call.
Other top Democratic leaders — Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C. — who are 80 and 81 — are also running unopposed. House Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries, of New York, did not face any competition for his post as the fifth-ranking leader, and was reelected on Wednesday.
Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Ill., who ran the House Democrats' campaign arm, said she would not run for another term. Two other Democrats — Rep. Tony Cardenas of California and Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney of New York — are vying for the position that will be decided later this month.
Top leaders and political analysts forecasted that Democrats would expand their majority — potentially picking up as many as 15 seats — but the party's disappointment instead

Wonder what AOC and her ilk think of this, eh?
As AOC learns how to pimp her votes for cash, she’ll pipe down.
She won with no challengers.
Just like in Communist dictatorships
She knows where the bodies are and that there is room for more. NOT surprised.
“Wonder what AOC and her ilk think of this, eh?”
Pelosi is skilled, rich, a money maker, and connected. AOC would do well to tread lightly. Besides, Pelosi is as far left as the squad, she’s just careful not to let it all be out in the open.
It’s a rigged system.
You only get one shot at the queen.
If the R’s were smart (yeah, I know, they are the STUPID party), they would team up with about 10 Dems who don’t want Nanzi. Yes, even AOC (who, if Speaker, could NOT become POTUS in any case because she isn’t 35). That would be a major embarrassment to the Dems, and would really screw up “unity” in their party.
I thought there were still enough undecided House races that it’s still possible for the Republicans to pull this out. Isn’t her highness’ coronation a tad early?
Why does this House elect the speaker for the next House when there could be a whole new set of people coming in?
y should we care?
Did they use dominion software?
They are assuming the Republicans don’t flip the House...
Got the numbers? Last i heard the total standing was 220-213 with several(most in CA-?) to be determined.
I think so. The speaker isn’t actually elected until the new Congress convenes.
What is meant, I think, is that Pelosi will be the Democrats’ nominee for Speaker.
All with no threats being made behind the scenes. LOL
are all of the house races decided?
What do you expect from NPR. Must have gone to public schools.
