Sources tell NY1 the MTA is proposing deep service cuts to subways and bus that could mean long waits between trains and longer walks to the bus stop, plus nearly 10,000 workers laid off.
The MTA is planning to present the plan to its board during its Wednesday meeting.
MTA officials have threatened 40 to 50 percent transit cuts and layoffs unless the agency gets $12 billion it requested from Washington D.C.
The plan obtained by NY1 shows that on weekends, trains could run every 15 minutes, with longer waits between trains on weekdays, and even potential, unspecified suspensions in service.
The MTA raises the possibility of eliminating entire bus routes, and cuts to trips on a third of bus routes that survive the cut. The MTA aims to have New Yorkers within a half mile of a bus stop after the cuts.
The layoffs alone - 9,367 workers, mostly NYC Transit subway and bus workers - would save the MTA $1.2 billion a year.
In a statement, MTA spokesperson Ken Lovett said, "We've said all along that unless we received $12 billion in federal emergency assistance we would be forced to enact draconian cuts and layoffs. As we are required to enact a balanced budget and the feds have yet to act on another COVID-19 relief package that would help mass transit, we are moving ahead hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. If the federal aid comes through in that amount, we will adjust our spending plan accordingly."
John Samuelsen, an MTA board member and president of the Transport Workers Union, said in a statement that “the TWU will fight tooth and nail to defend the MTA workforce, there will be serious consequences if there is an attempt to implement this plan.”

Business is off ridership is down and Covid makes riding in confined spaces dangerous anyway. They do have to cut costs. Playing political economic games with the people is ultimately an economy buster and the people will look at who is in charge!
After almost a year of Covid ideocy and still more and greater ideocy projected it’s extremely hard for me to believe that the economy isn’t going to crater.
DO IT ALREADY!
It seems to me that DiBlasi has been talking about layoffs for six months at least, but none has occurred SFAIAA. Has any transit worker been laid off? Has any NYC government "worker" been laid off? Any government "worker" anywhere?
ML/NJ
Why the f*** do the rest of us, who chose not to live in NYC, have to bailout that cesspool’s sh*tty mass transit system?
They can go to hell.
They love Biden! Good!
