I learned my lesson about being armed in wild country when I was about 19.

I had gone hiking in the Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico, entering the mountains from their east side then driving pretty far in. This is a very remote area. So, I went hiking up a trail and about a mile in beard a loud snarl. A mountain lion was very close by although I could not see it and he quite obviously wanted me to get lost. I froze for some moments then slowly walked backwards then turned to slowly reverse down the trail.

Do not go into wild places unarmed even you’re just going to hang around camp. The only reason humans are the apex predator is because we discovered weapons.

though the coyotes are getting ballsier by the day

Be careful about the coyotes. You know that children may be inside them using the tail for steering and looking out through the nostrils to see where they are going.

I hear from environmentalists that Wolves have more to fear from humans than vice versa.

That is as it should be. There was a reason wolves were hunted to extinction in England.

Wolves will prey on isolated humans, and are a formidable adversary.

Image looks more like wolf-dog hybrids than real wolves

Human deaths aren't the only measure of depredation. Dog Lives Matter. So do livestock lives, of all kinds.

I just posted about how WONDERFUL our Fall is this season in the Weekly Garden Thread.

We’re actually HAVING Fall this year, versus going straight into Winter Mode on October 31st!

Beau’s hunting group had one dog/wolf fatality this year when they were hunting in far northern Wisconsin (south of Ashland - THAT far up!)

The dog’s owner had the death certified by a Vet, and I think he got a check for $1500.00 from the DNR for losing his dog to a wolf. Not that it makes up for it, as that dog was worth SO much more; monetarily and breeding-wise. :(

The other run-in was four dogs against one Porcupine. Two they could take care of themselves (none were MY dogs, thank goodness!) but two needed sedation and a trip to the Vet for quill pulling and some stitches.

Mother Nature wins more than she loses!

Idiots here in CO just voted to “re-introduce” (they were never originally native) Grey Wolves in the state. Its probably a few years out before they implement it, but just stupidity...

Malinois are predatory to livestock. (50lbs at 6 months old means they’re some kind of cross.) True livestock guarding breeds would help against lions but no dog can take on a wolf pack.

Thanks. It’s probably my faulty memory and not Malinois. It was some very large dog for livestock protection. She got two puppies and they were huge at six months.

Hopefully you’re right and they’re not Mals. My Mal breeding friends are already fed up trying to stop people from getting Mals for all the wrong reasons. It’s not a good breed to get popular.

Were wolves really never native to Colorado? We used to have wolves in Massachusetts, and they still come down into Maine and northern Vermont from Canada. I always assumed wolves to native to pretty much everywhere.

.......great question and great story!

I drove up to the Canadian border checkpoint, parked in the parking lot, took my folder of about 8 pages of PALS forms into the office with me, walked up to the desk and identified myself with passport and verbally and handed the PALS forms to the RCMP guy on duty. I was braced for everything from a pat on the back for being an old man going down the Yukon by myself or being arrested and water boarded. None of that happened. He reviewed my PALS forms thoroughly which included a description of 2 pistols, one shotgun and an AR 15. He then asked where I was traveling from and to on the Yukon and we had a short discussion about that and he took my $25.00 fee and that was that.

In my opinion, the rules concerning pistols in Canada are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo overdone and overcooked and ambiguous that about the only thing that matters to a Mounty when he is interviewing you is something like “Is this guy a threat or not?” Me being a 72 year old man from Texas alone on the Yukon and passing through Canada was just a situation he did not feel was a threat to anybody. That’s my opinion. So, like all bureaucracies, there’s a wide gap between words on paper and actual practice in the field.

Sorry. I didn’t realize you were possibly a snowflake.

Otherwise, I wouldn’t have posted it or put a warning on it. Sorry.

Nature is brutal and abounds with apex predators,

I love them too....I think the secret to having a dog that you can pretty much let free in the yard...has to be too big for an eagle to carry off. :D

Although, there is a video somewhere on the net, that has a Golden Eagle carrying off a mountain goat.
